Materials are the most time consuming elements when tweaking your scenes. In the end it is all about light and materials!
This new v3 material editor is nice and got upgraded and simplified. But still not quite there yet...

It would be great if we could customize our own presets within each type (Opaque, transparent...). Everyone is using different materials and textures. If I could save my materials (forget about MXM gallery, it's dead and quality is not easy to find), my work would be even more simple. Textures, IOR, HDRi, etc would be available in a folder under MXM preferences as usual. These are the only things that really need separated folders. The preferences for materials (all the tweaks that took so long to get) are a few bytes and could be saved as an external file also.
Now the good part... we could open this exported file in any computer and textures could be linked via dropbox or using an external hard drive or just pasting it in that computer... Now I would be able to access to my material collection anywhere.
MXM gallery should be about having easy access to quality materials but it gets even more difficult because if you use just one material that is poor and slow it will damage your image. The scenes I render normally have more than 50 materials and managing it is hard. Who should I trust? What materials are SL fast? etc...
So we trust ourselves mainly right? And sometimes we use others users materials edit them to our way. Some need quality and slow SL and others the opposite!

Don't get me wrong but this is a photographic render approach... Do photograph professionals worry about materials? Or instead their creativity is about framing, exposure, theme, passing a message or an idea? Most of the down quality of maxwell images are because of materials and their time consuming... Fortunately, with maxwell lightning the scene is easy and infinite...

We will write soon a doc page about how to create your own presets for the mat editor, and these presets actually work for any extension (grass, volumetrics etc). It's really easy, it's just text files which you place in the extensions/presets folder. So it will work pretty much as you say.

As a photographer myself i have to say that yes materials (or surfaces) do matter when you shoot something. A dirty product will never look good when you do a productshot for a client, it needs to be clean pre shooting and also post shooting. I know it sounds silly but yes surfaces are very important to photographers, just not in exactly the same way as it's handled with Maxwell but the basic principle is the same. :)

Magnus, what I wanted to say was the effort we put on materials with maxwell is huge because we have to create, edit and test them for the final image/animation. As a photographer you do not make them, instead you use them as a tool of creativity. We are talking about reality and lightning up a scene is thinking of reality and how we want to use it... Sky light, studio light setup, IBL, camera settings, etc.
Would be great if we had this feeling with materials... At least I don't have then and sometimes I struggle to survive! :(
Mihai, MXM gallery with an overhaul about 60% finished!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

With regards to the overhaul , are you pulling off any mxm's up there Mihai ?

the reason I ask is even if the material is outdated I sometimes download them just to look at the textures used and find that very useful. Will all the mxm's still be available that are up there or should I just start downloading as many as I can for reference?
