Materials are the most time consuming elements when tweaking your scenes. In the end it is all about light and materials!
This new v3 material editor is nice and got upgraded and simplified. But still not quite there yet...
It would be great if we could customize our own presets within each type (Opaque, transparent...). Everyone is using different materials and textures. If I could save my materials (forget about MXM gallery, it's dead and quality is not easy to find), my work would be even more simple. Textures, IOR, HDRi, etc would be available in a folder under MXM preferences as usual. These are the only things that really need separated folders. The preferences for materials (all the tweaks that took so long to get) are a few bytes and could be saved as an external file also.
Now the good part... we could open this exported file in any computer and textures could be linked via dropbox or using an external hard drive or just pasting it in that computer... Now I would be able to access to my material collection anywhere.
MXM gallery should be about having easy access to quality materials but it gets even more difficult because if you use just one material that is poor and slow it will damage your image. The scenes I render normally have more than 50 materials and managing it is hard. Who should I trust? What materials are SL fast? etc...
So we trust ourselves mainly right? And sometimes we use others users materials edit them to our way. Some need quality and slow SL and others the opposite!
Don't get me wrong but this is a photographic render approach... Do photograph professionals worry about materials? Or instead their creativity is about framing, exposure, theme, passing a message or an idea? Most of the down quality of maxwell images are because of materials and their time consuming... Fortunately, with maxwell lightning the scene is easy and infinite...
