You can create that diffuse material in like, 2 seconds...

just set its reflectance color, high roughness, and go!

No way it crashes if i try to rotate or move the camera.. it crashes if i try to render.

Thank you thank you thank you!!

quick question before i go any further. you say Coatings are special. what are they and why didn't you just make MikesShiny's transparent gloss coat with the coating instead of a BSDF?
Okay, to be honest, I don't entirely understand coatings, other than to say they simulate extremely thin layers of material, like in a soap bubble. I can tell you that using them you can get real-world coating layers that are totally physically accurate and do crazy real-world stuff, but to be honest, other than soap-bubbles, I'm not sure what I'll use them for. Eventually you'll see some screenshots of various coating thicknesses in action and you'll get it.

But you were right about thinking "Coating" would be like a Clear Coat. That's EXACTLY what I thought at first... maybe that needs a relabeling, too. But for now, just know the effects you're looking for can all be achieved with that one, all powerful Basic Material. Nothing basic about it.

The whole thing freaks me out on some level... it's almost too simple to believe. But you get addicited to it QUICK. I've seen some complex shaders that render at lightening speed you won't believe. Trust me, this userbase will find those looks REAL soon... You can expect some serious kick-ass anisotropic metals in the first few days, that's for sure.

daros -

I'm so sorry, brother... but whatever's going on with your system seems out of my league. I can't figure out what would be crashing it that hard, that often. DEFINTELY post it in the Studio Bugs Forum for the guys to look at!!

Absolutely.. or how about a 3 or 4 layer:

2 for carpaint, (1 basecoat, and 1 topcoat)
1 for Heavy dirt,
1 for light dust?

P.S. Think of Weight Map sorta like ALPHA CHANNEL

Lemme take a look...

**UPDATE: Okay... #1, drop the Coatings layer from your material "Temple". #2... you got no lights, brother! You need at least one object with an emiiter material on it until sky is all sorted out. Start there.

I should also note that the little 'render' icon doesn't launch anything for me. I've set up the environment variables, and I can render from Lightwave okay -- I just get blackness. This particular scene I set up completely within Maxwell Studio to limit the number of variables.

I can't seem to modify a camera in Studio. Even if I start studio fresh...create a new camera..the second I try and modify it ..program crashes. I don't have a great video card...but never had any problems with it in any openGL situation in FormZ, Max, Rhino...etc.??

edit...worth noting that if I import object via .dxf I have no problem moving them around. That makes me think it isn't openGL related? What do you think?

yes, you definitely need to be able to launch mxcl from that little icon... stay on the problem until you get that sorted out. You must've gotten something crossed in there somewhere. Work for now from inside Studio alone to help limit the variables...

Hi Mverta, i justy installed it on my laptop, sony Vaio. exactly the same errors. I simply try to move the camera and i have the error. Even if the scene is without any object, only a camera, it crashes.
