i sorted that out by coping and pasting license.dat in the subfolder mxcl, this way mxcl stars. i feel i'm almost there.
YES! I remember I had to do this too.. good call!

jeffpatton wrote:Ahh, thanks Mike. I adjusted the environment variables to match yours and now the 3dsmax plugin doesn't give me the mxcl error....but it renders the same thing as Frances (and everyone else I suppose)
Wow, clearly the 3dmax plugin is screwed. But I still envy you even HAVING one ;)

I'm curious if anyone's gotten into the material stuff yet, 'cause that does work and DAMN is it deep. Somebody get into all that ansiotropic stuff I was a royal-pain-in-the-ass about during development, because no app can touch what you can do with it.

Mike,

Thanks for all your help.
Your test file renders just fine. although mine dosen't just yet.

My e-mail never mentioned uninstalling the beta. so here goes.
----------------------------------------------
When you suggested:

"you want to make sure that in your MAXWELL_ROOT variable, your path is to "whatever"\Next Limit\Maxwell
But you want to add, additionally, "whatever"Next Limit\Maxwell\mxcl\ to the Path system variable."

It reminded me of the old DOS system variables in autoexec.bat and config.sys.

I'm using Max 7 and 8 where do I set the paths for maxwell?
-----------------------------------------------

BTW: adehus and dizzlewizzle can just... Oops, can't stoop down to their level :)

Sorry, I am just getting real tired of reading the Bi*** session. If adehus wants what he says, he should wait for R3 or R4. I guess he's to young to remember what a pain it was when we moved from DOS to Windows. The problems we are having now are NOTHING compared to then. And I think the rewards are at least as great.

Looking at the new stuff... This is going to be Cool!!

So far, I'm also getting nothing but blackness when I do full renders. The previews work, but kind of screwed since I'm using Physical Sky for illumination.

It's gonna be a while before I sort out using bitmapped textures.

But, I've made some headway in getting results from this.

I wanted to say thanks, Mike, for getting in the trenches here and helping. I've beta tested enough software that I had some idea what I was getting into here.

ENVIRONMENT VARIABLES -

Forgive me guys, this is the Win2k way, but you'll know how to get to it in your XP's I'm sure...

Essentially, I'm right-clicking on My Computer to bring up Properties. For me, it's Properties>Advanced>Environment Variables, but I'm pretty sure it's in a slightly different heirarchical location on XP.

But once I'm in Environment Variables, you can create new ones, either USER ones, or SYSTEM ones. Here, you just want to make 2 User variables, called MAXWELL_ROOT and one called Path. The "value" for the MAXWELL_ROOT variable is the path to the files - in my case, C:\Program Files\Next Limit\Maxwell

The "value" for the Path variable is the path to both hierarchies of the NL stuff, in my case:
C:\Program Files\Next Limit\RealFlow3\;C:\Program Files\Next Limit\Maxwell\;C:\Program Files\Next Limit\Maxwell\mxcl\

Now, the plug-ins, at least my Maya "mayall" plug-in needed its own variable too, called MAYALL_ROOT... but this may be just a Maya thing..

I've rebooted my machine to see if the constellations would thusly align. Now mxst.exe won't start at all. In other words, I can't even bring up the Studio.

Hi Mverta, i'm simply tryng to move the camera in MWstudio. It crashes.
Only numerical camera position imput works.
I have tried to load about 100 different 3ds files and only 2 are loaded but with merged material information.
Tried to import more as 50 different LWO files. All materials are sistematically merged toghether.

If i move an object it don't crashes. If i move the camera it crashes.

Are you shure we have the right version?

DAMN.. what the hell's going on there I wonder. I don't want to insult you with all the usual suggestions, but when something fails so utterly it's usually something simple right at the heart of it, you know? I mean, these apps are buggy as hell but they freakin' LAUNCH... I just gotta say go back over the process again, make sure you didn't miss something, mistype something.. I hate not having more to offer.

For f...s sake, just get Next Limit to buy an unlimited version of Vise Installer and be done with it. It takes 10 minutes to set-up an installer to handle everything that's been discussed here.

Having to right-click, blah, blah, blah to set variables and paths and shit
is just amateurish at best. There is just no need for it.

daros...

sounds like a graphics card thing to me.. some serious OpenGL voodoo, doesn't it?

Here's a question.. have you tried importing an object and deleting all its materials from the scene and starting over? In fact, to debug, I'd try blowing out EVERYTHING in the scene but the raw object geometry itself and make a new camera, emitter material and material, as well.

It could VERY well be that Studio doesn't know yet what to do with non-compatible materials/info, and it's just crashing 'cause it can't deal.

Try that...
