I thought I read somewhere that v3 might be capable of rendering individual SLs for different materials. Is there such thing?

Maxwell 3.1 enables you to select sections of the render and render those to a higher SL.

It doesn't exactly mean "Individual SL per Material" but we have something similar called "Extra Sampling" here:
