I'm pulling my hair out here. Working on a deadline and suddenly MXED will not save files anymore. Tried other PC's in the network, same problem? Restarted server, restarted stations, but nothing seems to get MXED working again.

Thought to had this problem before, but now it just totally stopped working

MXED allways feels a bit clunky when opening in Windows (network).

EDIT: Just checked, I can use the MW Studio editor to finish my work.

Where are you saving the MXM files? A network drive? A local folder?

Hello Mihai,

We are storing the files on a network drive, but I also tried local. It seems that our Windows enviroment and MXED are not quite comfortable. On several occasions I just can't start MXED by clicking a MaterialFile, it sometimes crashes explorer.

Yesterday I continued my work with the Studio, but after some time MXED worked again. Somehow I get the feeling it has something to do with Windows "locking" files. Or maybe the Tumbnail file.

Same problem here, it's very frustrating...
I'm working on a local machine, every time I change a material MXED crashes when saving. I noticed if I create a new material it saves fine but if I try to edit it won't save...

BTW, I noticed Windows had an update a couple of days ago, could it be related to the problem?!?

The problem continues, also the work around via the Studio is not working.

There is NO way I can create new materials and save them or modify existing materials and save them!

What is going on!? I am promoting Maxwell for it's superb rendering, but this is not helping me

EDIT: How strange, this problem occurs on all our machines, but after a while everything starts to work again. I can save the data from MXED. It looks like a time-based problem!?

Hi,

This behaviour you are describing is very strange.
It could be simply related to the thumb views. In that case uninstalling Maxwell Shell Extension from the Control Panel>Program and Features and rebooting may solve it.

If doesn't then it may be related to permissions or locale settings. In order to determine if it is so try this:

- Uninstall the Maxwell Shell Extension
- Try to reproduce it with a default material (one grey bsdf without textures) saved in a local folder with no spaces nor local characters (i.e C:\test). Check if this also fails there.
- Run MXED standalone as Admininstrator. Repeat the operation and check if it also fails then.

What kind of error does it show? It is just the MXM file that is not there?

Keep me informed about the evolution of this test.

Maybe you have some backup or sync program running that could be locking those files? Just a wild guess.

Tested the following:

- Uninstalled the Maxwell Shell Extension
- Run MXED as administrator
- Create new material from scratch (wizard-opaque)
- Save MXM as "Test.mxm" to local folder
- Answered yes to "pack textures?"
- Texture folder gets created, but no MXM file and no error or warning

I tried writing to "my documents" and even to a USB-stick, but nothing works. Someone from our ICT-servicedesk followed my steps and didn't understand also. I thought it was related to the "read-only"state of Windows 7 folders, but this shouldn't be a problem. I can open a existing file and modify it, it then saves (however this has failed before).

The Studio seems to be able to create a new file and export it to the desired location (but this has been failing before too).

We tried this on several machines, but no sigar

Later today I'll see a colleague from another department and check if he has the same problem.

It looks like this is network related or Windows update related? Anyone else?

EDIT: When searching C: diks, windows finds shortcut files to the mxm's I tried to save (on D:). The file doesn't exist, but something got created??

Where exactly did you try to save the MXM? On the C drive or the D drive?

A long shot but open MXED, go to File>Preferences and click Restore defaults. Then close and reopen it.

About the file extension: http://filext.com/file-extension/MXM

Any apps there you are maybe using like Project/Outlook that cold interfere with the saving? But that shouldn't matter anyway.....

Restore defaults doesn't help. I closed all apps and tried to save, but nothing happens.

All the Maxwell users (4) experience the same problem. I hope we can solve this because more users will join.
Saving to C:, D: (local disks), network disks, "my documents" or even a flash drive...... nothing happens.... well something happens but no file appears. Nobody else here has this problem? (the problem feels related to our system setup/network)

It looks like Studio is still able to export a new .mxm, so we can use this workaround for creating new materials. Modifying materials and save-as from MXED does work mostly.

Just a had a similar issue. Try converting the MXM from a wizard material to Advanced, then save. This worked for me.

I just tried saving here a material that's using the "Opaque" type and it saved it ok. I saved the MXM using File>Save MXM as from inside MXED....

Could you please give us a precise step by step, or maybe record a small video?

Which version of Maxwell do you have installed?

Yes, I would think it is a bug.

If you want the material to remain a wizard material, create a new wizard material and save it with the same name as a already saved non-wizard material (overwrite).
