I tried searching first but couldn't find much.

Is it faster to render with a Pinhole lens and use z depth in post?

Or just as fast to render with a thin lens?

It depends really on how heavy the blur is. If it's very heavy it will take longer to clear those out of focus areas. On the other hand these heavy blur effects may not be so easy to fake in post with a plugin, compared to a smaller amount of blur.

Thanks Mihai. So possibly for the smaller blurs it might be worth the time leaving the pinhole lens and using z depth? Or will the render time not really reduce with a small blur anyways?

Just trying to speed up my renders any way possible.

You could do a little test to find out Cody :D setting no depth of field (pin hole) in render does give some speed up . But not enough I would suspect to offset doing the zdepth and post from my experience( as in it doesn't effect render times that much having standard dof on in my experience with maxwell).

I wish I had time to test. That is why I am trying to speed up renders as much as possible. Just swamped. But that isn't a bad thing either.

Just wondering by any chance if anyone has tried this yet? I am doing it in modo with the modo render and it is speeding things up considerably.
