So do you have the maxwell_license.lic file in /Users/Shared/NextLimit/rlm_nl/licenses ?

YEPP! IT IS THERE...on the NEW MacPro
I ment on the old one. Is it there, in that folder (/Users/Shared/NextLimit/rlm_nl/licenses), on the old one, where Studio is not working?

I now created the folders you mentioned on my oldMacPro!:

/Users/Shared/NextLimit/rlm_nl/licenses

and put the maxwell_license.lic ( Which only contains this one line: HOST 10.0.1.99 ANY 5053) in that licenses folder but same problem! NOT WORKING....

I have honestly no idea why this is always so difficult in your case, I can only think to also put that same lic file also in the folder /Users/<username>/Maxwell
Is maybe Studio being blocked from contacting the server on your new computer?
So Maxwell correctly gets its license on this old computer, and it's getting it from the new computer? The only problem is Studio? Please turn off all firewalls, ON BOTH COMPUTERS, and see.

It helps maybe if you understand the logic of this system better, it's really not that complicated:

You have a computer that's running a license server.
All other computers need to know to connect to this license server to get their licenses
They know this, from that line in the "maxwell_license.lic" file.
What does that line say? It says, what is the IP or name of that computer, and which port should it use to connect to the computer running the license server.
Where should this .lic license be placed? Check the docs

If any of this is not entirely clear by now, please let me know.

That's all the voodoo there is. So if in your strange case, Maxwell gets the license ok, but Studio doesn't I can only think something is blocking it from connecting to the RLM computer.

hi mihai, thanks again for the infos. as i wrote before, i have done everything you mentioned. and it still does not work. studio just can not find the license on the new mac pro, maxwell does....

firewalls are all turned off and i actially do undestand the licensing process and that only one license server is running and all other computers just need the maxwell_license.lic which directs them to the server on another computer.

could there be some old maxwell license code fragments or something like that on my old macpro that prevent studio to look at the right place?

frustrating, right?

cheers

Mihai! I found the problem! NOT!!!!!

Looks like my D-Link Gigabit switch had a problem!

Somehow the switch let enough data through to let Maxwell Render find the RLM server on my new MacPro but not enough data (or too slow) for Maxwell Studio to find the RLM server.
It always took quite some time for Maxwell Studio to connect to the new MacPro which got me wondering.

I ordered a new switch and all works fine now! STOP. It only does while using a Airport extreme as backup solution while waiting of the net switch....

Cheers

SAD UPDATE....

Got my new Gigabit Switch but am having the same problems.

Maxwell render on all Macs finds the license on my new MacPro but Studio does not. Even if I start Win 8.1 on one of my MacPros Maxwell will and can find the license on the new MacPro but Studio claims that Maxwell is NOT licensed.....

Could there be a problem with the connection between the new MacPro (version2014) and an old one (2010)?

THIS IS KILLING ME!!! I can only use ONE license with Studio right now even though for export from Modo or Rhino I need to have them connect to the License server.......

ANY OTHER IDEAS, guys?

Hi Q,

Are you sure you are not already using your UI/full licenses when trying to open another Studio (you know that any plugin or Studio running take 1 full license, while Maxwell itself takes a render node one). It would explain why Maxwell finds licenses and not Studio. You know there is 1 full + 10 nodes as default package.

nachob

PM- Also running in the rlm server machine http://localhost:5054 will show you a web page where you can check how many licenses you have and how many licenses are in use (clicking the "Status" button).

Hi Nachob

I own TWO licenses, floating ones, and they used to work fine after fiddling around getting them to work when Maxwell render 3 was released back in December some time.
We finally did it with a lot of Mihai's help, but now I got my new Mac Pro, moved the License server to that new machine and all hell broke lose.

I usually use one license with Studio on computer ( the new MacPro 12core under OSX) to do my setups.
The other (old) MacPro usually runs Win 8.1 and I have the second license for that one to export my files from Rhino or Modo.

And in the license file there are definitely two licenses listed.

Do you have maybe two different license keys for your floating licenses? Or just one? Because if you have two separate ones, you will need to add the second license to the first one (using the second option in the License activator). You need to do this on the computer running RLM, and NOT the one where Studio is not licensed.

Lets try this also:

1. Make sure Maxwell or Studio, or any Maxwell plugins are not running on ANY of your computers. Basically close down all 3D apps, and also Maxwell and Studio.
2. On the computer running RLM, go to a browser, localhost:5054
3. Press the Status button in the left hand area
4. Get a screenshot of the table that appears on the page
5. In this table, there is a "License usage" column, and a button. Press the button and take another screenshot of the page that appears
6. Open now only Studio on the computer where it's not working
7. If the license activator pops up, just close it
8. Check now in the RLM interface, press the status button again, see if anything changed, and press the License usage button also to see if anything changed.
9. Start Maxwell on the computer where Studio is not working.
10. Check again the RLM interface, press the Status button, and check if any changes appear.
