You need to explode the jpeg after you import it. Then it will render. After you explode it, you can select it and turn it into a group again, and it will still render.

How about bitmap transparencies to render? I can get the bitmaps to show up well, but any transparent areas render as black.

The default conversions of SU materials with transparencies isn´t setup correctly now. The bimap is in the Transmittance slot, but is not in use.
You need to fix it in Studio for now. Select the material and open it in the material editor. Check the box next to the map icon in Transmittace. Also set ND to more than 1 (1.51 for glass)
