In next release we can hide object from camera and still have it visual
in shadows and reflection. Does this give us option top create matte/shadow
materials or objects?

Please answer?

This is very important option for us who are working in vfx field.

Mike shows this feature in his announcement. It's the image with the sphere and the mirror. Great new feature.
Fran, i know, but it's not matte/shadow what that image is showing.

Matte/shadow will receive shadows and show it in alpha. It won't be
visible any other ways. Thats really important option when you need
to place 3D objects to live footage.

So no one will ever answer to this question? MIKE! TOM!

Oops. I transposed the "we can" to "can we". Doh.

GaryBrown wrote:Previously I had asked about normals and materials showing as black in my scene in my host application. Any answer on this?
Well, I have had problems with black patches in rednerings, then I built
proper UV coords using Bodypaint, and the black patches were gone.

It seems that M~R does not deal well with UV outside the range 0..1 or
may even have additional assumptions about UV direction.

Hope it helps

HDR/MXI Lighting

Speaking of lights, image-based lighting is back, and more powerful than ever: Light your scene with an HDR/MXI environment sphere with separate channels for Background, Reflection, Refraction, and Illumination: load a single map for all the channels, or different maps for each if you like! And how about this: load HDR channels as spherical projections, but map the background image as a screen projection, for simple composite shots. Or hide the background entirely, if you want. For your emitters, take advantage of the power of MXI lighting textures for even more creative flexibility.

Will this let us render lighting using physical sun/sky and use mxi/hdr for reflections? can we use the two together?

what about fog, has fog be re-enabled?

Guys -

As a rule: if it's not in the announcement, I can't talk about it. Doesn't mean it isn't in there, or planned. Means I can't talk about it.

LarsSon - In the same way that it is possible to create an Alpha mask by just rendering with flat fully-illuminated black and white materials it should be possible (because you will be able to remove objects and leave their shadows behind) to create a sort of Matte/Shadow (I assume you refer to the Max material system) arrangement - it may be a post process but I guess you should be able to cover most eventualities.

So, Mike (or anyone), cooperative rendering is in annoucement. Can you answer my question from previous page, pls? (probably lost in long thread) I am really interested in how coop render works...
Or if it is secret, just say, and I will be satisfied...

Good news, and great to hear something after all this time. The 1.0 release certainly looks impressive.

However, with all things Next Limit, I'll believe it when I see it.

spekoun wrote:I have one question about cooperative render. How is ensured difference between single mxi's rendered on various PC's?
Random seed, not machine dependent. Even if you start the same render two times on the same machine, you have different noise.

Or if i do 4 same renders on one PC, every one will be different and after combining i will get better one?
Yep
What will happen, when i render one mxi then rename and copy that file 4x (for example: file01, file02...) and then combine them?
You probably get the file you started with. The average of the exact same
file should be the same file,

Is it possible to get better result from same mxi's?
It's as possible as the perpetuum mobile. Read: NO.

Cheers
