All posts relating to Maxwell Render 1.x

First, with others, I am very pleased with the upcoming features, particularly the standalone materials editor, that is if I understand correctly that it would be fully and easily integrated with our plug-ins (FormZ in my case).

I'm getting the impression from Tom's reply that weight/transmittance mapping is going to be the de facto way to use 2D images that use alpha channels. If that's the case would someone post a non-techie-language description of that process? I've seen some posts regarding this but frankly can not make heads or tails out of it....can not use MW until this feature works easily (we use a LOT of 2D images for landscaping in our architectural renderings.

Forgive my ignorance, but what are caustics as they relate to Maxwell (feel like I should have paid better attention in my physics class!)?

in this ocean of bliss,

WHEN WILL WE HAVE A SCHEDULE ?

Please NL, ban the word "soon" from your vocabulary
Every time we got a schedule it turned out some problem popped up and the schedule had to be changed... with a lot of angry people as a result and the comments, 'rather when it's done than not done at the set date'... surely you don't want to get back to that?

Good to see the max plugin getting love, but I hope the other plugins aren't being left out.

Oh and lastly, I heard this morning that the Sony PS3 will support Linux on its required HD.. would be nice to run Maxwell on a set of those :D

Isn't it a 8 core cell CPU? It would mean 2 seats a box to render with it. Ouch!

Yes, you can use every material-wise need without Studio.

tom or mike could you please elaborate if the lighting preset are materials or objects? because in the announcement they are named "light objects".

as Mike said, there are other features that are still under dev....and it might be that it is planned to release v1.0 next....not RC6 or whatever....

I have a few questions regarding the Multi-Light Illumination Control.

1. Most scenes I have seen are matte scenes. Are reflections/caustics etc stored within the light as well? Meaning when a light is turned off, all the reflections that were in the scene (meaning that light was showing up in a reflective cabinet surface...to use your kitchen scene as example) go away as well? Very nice feature..just curious what is stored with each light.

I just rewatched the first introduction to this feature and it clearly demonstrated that the reflections + caustics are stored in each light. No need to answer what was already clear, sorry I missed it. Very cool indeed.

2. Will there be another test demonstrating SSS in the near future? In the current example scene, it is tough to see the evolution of this feature.

3. All talk about RC6 has seemed to go away. (A while back, I beleive Tom was talking of a imminent release of RC6...) Seems now that v1 may be the next release. Just curious.

Thanks for all the hard work Mike, Tom and NL..looking forward to this release.

Lighting presets are custom sets of parameters, like Halogen 40W etc. and optionally they come with some common low-mesh emitters for ultra realism.
