Mike,

Thanks for the latest post in the Announcement section. I was getting rather pessimistic about seeing a return on my investment. Your well thought out post has given me a positive feeling about Maxwell again.

I don't see NL delivering a working V1 before 6 months have passed, but I now feel confident that they actually will.

You don’t have degree in public relations by any chance?

thanks...good to know... could be a workaround to spare rendertime....if the render time of rengion wont be the same of the whole.. of course

Any info on the network rendering.
Yes.
Yes.
Usually, depending on complexity of physical phenomena.
I've seen a really intuitive and robust network rendering implementation, but I don't think it'll be in RC 5. This is a big one with me for our farm, too :)

Dear Mike, thans for the answers and to Victor too.

Everything looks great but as always, one question is bouncing in my mind...will the RC5 tuesday release be for OSX too????

Thanks.

I've answered this. I've been told an OSX version is ready and functioning, but I haven't actually seen it with my own two eyes. I've asked for a copy so I can confirm.

Thnks Mike, sorry i've miss your previus answer on this.

Mike, one other question, can material be asign as a drag and drop thing?? or is it by selection??

hi mike,

thank you for your motivating words first of all !

Looks like I am more a Rs1+ guy since we mostly need standard production materials for products like plastics and metals if I understand the post.

But one question here: Will there be an expanded material set like they started with RC4 for the RC5 or was this an Rs2 approach ?
I mean more plastics (e.g. shiny & silicons), metals (e.g. anodized alu or steal), ceramics and the coatings ?

There is an early drag and drop implementation, yes. It'll get sexier..

You can do tons of stuff already, and in the future, the material options will be even more flexible. Right now, you can certainly do shiny or silicon plastics, shy of SSS needs, and all kinds of metals, and diffuses, and cloth stuff. With the current Weightmapping layer system (which will become traditional stacked layers system) you can do ceramics, coatings, all kinds of stuff. Like, I've done anisotropic aluminum with a frosted satiny clear-coat with dirt on top.

WOW Mike that is so great news to me.... well for all of us,

Mike i do not know is you have ever used Artlantis R , but i am so used to its easy of use, now Maxwell seems to be heading to a very easy user experience.

It's at the heart of the Maxwell philosophy. I don't about you guys, but I am utterly spoiled in terms of GI. I still work in mental ray and it feels like the freakin' Jurassic age setting up GI to get half the results of Maxwell. I detest the process at this point. One day I'll be telling my grandkids, "When I was your age, we had to guess the number of photons to shoot out into the scene and then spend 3 days optimizing filters to get splotches out. Plus we couldn't do animations without baking the textures. And we had to sit through renders! It wasn't always realtime like it is today!"

sounds promising,

the point is that I do not want to create those by my own, this is the reason why I left mental ray and others having enough of shading networks.....NL started to provide presets to load into studio for physical accurate materials (like the shiny plastic set in the RC4) will they continue and expand the variety ? What set will they deliver for RC5 ?

Sorry no time to create them by my own....after I hit render I want to work on my next idea.

There are certainly some presets, but I think the userbase will be the primary source for this, like it is with mental ray and others. I would like to see the forum area for .mxm's become really dense with materials made by users in real-world scenarios.

Understand your opinion here, as an example the evermotion forum is a great example for user knowledge exchange, a really great source to learn by examining scenes.
But I do not agree totally, since the creators of the render core will always know better how their baby works and it is there job to provide best access to it. They are in a very good position to create these sets since they know much better how physics work in their model.
NL already started to go another way here, hope they will continue and discover it as a great service opportunity
