you can't do that, the sunlight that passes through a glass object is a caustic. you can't see any light if caustics are turned off, as in your example.
so, i cant understand what is this all about!!! when caustics are turned on in beta 1.2.2a, sunlight does go trhough glass... at least from inside point of view. i dont get it why people are screeming around about this.... beta do it!

maybe i am missing something here!!! sorry, if i understood all wrong.

best regards,
nuno

well, i think the same is valid also for emitters and glass, but I'm not sure...

Try the same scene, turn off the sunlight, and place an emitter outside of the room...

Even with all caustic layers on, the result should be 'not so nice,' - so maybe this could be a more valid test for glass material right now...

I think the RC cores resolved this problem...

in the image i posted before you can see the problem is there even with emitters. light does pass through glass, but you can only see a black shadow when looking at it through the glass.

Yup yup. But what I'm saying, is that if i decide to use an emitter instead of direct sunlight (as a workaround in the hopes that i will get less caustic noise for example), i find that the result using a (not so distant) emitter with glass gives me even worse results (ex. more caustic noise worse light penetration).:
(this image is without sunlight and with a plane emitter - 200,000 w/m^2sr )

This crappy pic was done in the same time as the last crappy pic me posted and its much worse...

Agree that the problem persists in both cases looking *though* glass...

well, seems to me that the problem is viewing from the outside, not from the inside.

mike, can you please do a render from the outside?
Thanks for pointing this out... it looks like we were relieved too fast :-(

yes. mike's render seems not to solve anything, cause beta always did this kind of scene (interior).

OK, so we better wait for mike`s test render from outside...

here's another one. sunlight does pass through glass, what we can't see are the caustics it produces when we look at them through the glass:

or maybe those caustics will show up eventually, so that we can make out the shadow of that cube on top of the glass plane, but i wouldn't bet on it. the preview doesn't show any sign of it.

and obviously, if we change point of view (we stumble into the blurry behind glass problem, but that's another story):

and now look at this, it's pure magic. in this case i used a huge plane which is almost completely off camera and placed in another object wich is very far from the scene:

i thought all these things were well known to anyone who started using maxwell in alpha stage and went through all the early sun/glass problems.

Yeah sorry I suffered severe brain damage right after alpha 1.1.32 (tractor accident)...

Maybe we could get Mike to rotate his camera to the exterior of the room and do a shot looking towards the interior? Might be useful...

maybe should also put a huge plane somewhewe...

that happened to me when whiskey left the board. but after a bit of playing with sun and glass i started remembering..

and btw, what happened to thomas? he's no longer a moderator here as long as i can see.
