No, not at all. If they ship it in its current state they would have a problem, but until they ship it, they haven't done anything illegal, since their only commitment to their customers was to ship them substantially functional software. The timetable was stupid PR, and labelling this release a release candidate was assinine (it should have been an RC renderer + an alpha of the GUI product, to maximize their public relations), but making sweeping changes to their system isn't even unethical, particularly when they're doing it in order to give their paying customers a better product, let alone illegal.

Besides, if they'd done this as a closed beta the way that Cebas did with fR, we wouldn't have known about the changes they made until after release, if ever.

I really do not know what to ask, except for help in general terms.
Today it is the second testing day, with the RC.
All I got is this:
Could import an old DXF format, could create cameras could set the sky and sun, could assign materials, but cannot render a preview nor a real render...
Every time I do something I save the file with the hope it will be there the next time I open it after the crash. But I have to do all again except importing the model. All the cameras are lost the sky settings are lost , the materials are lost.
I have read all the post that I could, and some of them helped me to understand the camera settings...
Please give me a hint. It will be greatly appreciated!!

You probably already saw this message from Victor in the announcement section.

I think it is great of him and the NL team to both apologize and mention that NL consider a kind of compensation.

Thanks

Victor wrote:Dear friends,

We understand the frustration with RC1, we are not happy too. The software has a great potential as you will see soon, however the pressure to release a first persion plus a wrong project schedule has lead us to this situation. I am confident than Maxwell will become stable very fast, as there are many small annoying bugs very easy to fix. The render engine requires some fine tuning now undergoing. As you can see in some examples, previous 30 hours results can be obtained now in 3 hours.

We are going to work very hard in the next days to provide continuous updates plus the rest of the missing plugins. The beta-testing team is really doing a great job sending feedback.

Again, we apologize for this situation and we will consider a kind of compensation for all the current customers. We are devoted to this job, in the bad and good times.

Thank you,

Victor
