I have maxwell_license and maxwell_suite_floating in that file location; time stamp from this lunchtime (after I re-booted the laptop into W7). With the laptop in W7 since then, I can quit and start Maxwell.exe without the two license files changing or disappearing or changing their time stamp; and there is no licensing error after quitting and starting Maxwell exe.

However, when I switch off the laptop or re-boot into OSX and then back into W7, I have to go through the process the screenshot above depicts.

But I don't think this has anything to do with the Maxwell installer.....it seems when you boot back into Windows, it boots back into a previous state or something like that. There is nothing in Maxwell that can make those lic files disappear.

When you boot back, do you still have the RLM server installed or does that get deleted too?

When I switch on the laptop or reboot it, RLM is running and the license files are there. It is just that when I then start Maxwell.exe, I need to go through the process described above in the screenshot.

Fenyman,

Not sure if this relevant but worth a shot. When you launch Maxwell have you read what it reports regarding the license? I had a problem recently where I had to put my hard drive in a new box and had a similar problem. When I launched Maxwell I got the following:

LICENSE INFO
License found in standard license path : /Volumes/Macintosh SSD/gary/Maxwell/maxwell_license.lic
ERROR: - Error getting license, returned code : License server does not support this product
ERROR: - Maxwell has no valid license.
ERROR: - NO LICENSE PRESENT

What is Maxwell reporting to you regarding License Info?

After getting this report, I opened the RLM log and saw that on Maxwell launch there was a line that read something like:

"a series of numbers" loaded or reported, "a series of numbers" expected.

I then opened my Maxwell license file and saw the loaded or reported string of numbers and changed it to the expected numbers. Restarted the computer and everything worked.

I wonder if during the licensing process Nextlimit servers are creating what I am referring to above as a "series a numbers" that is different for OSX vs. W7. Thus, when you reboot the expected string of numbers is not in the license file.

This may be unclear, but best if you report what Maxwell is reporting during its launch under LICENSE INFO.

But that makes no sense.....if the license files are still there, and the RLM server is still running.....

Anything different in the license files when you reboot? I can't imagine anything changes in the files themselves. When you open Maxwell after rebooting, check in the Console for the exact error message.

Thanks; let me describe the issue, once again:

For working with 2D, 3D and analysis software and controlling our render nodes and other PCs, I am using a MacBook Pro Retina laptop. It has OSX and Windows 7 Enterprise installed (bootcamp) and is always updated. The laptop boots into Windows 7 when switched on or re-booted automatically (because we use OSX very rarely). In Windows 7, I have the firewall disabled. RLM is running; I checked as per the Maxwell Render Documentation (http://localhost:5054) and in the task manager, too. The license files are where they should be and do not look modified in any way (file size, time stamp, etc.)

I went through the troubleshooting suggested at the top of the thread twice. I also wiped the Windows 7 partition and re-installed all software.

After 1. re-booting the laptop to switch from OSX to Windows 7 OR switching on the laptop from its switched off state OR re-booting from within Windows 7, I ALWAYS get the error message that Maxwell is not licensed when starting Maxwell.exe, see the longer screenshot above that depicts all modal windows in order of appearance and, to provide further information, please see Maxwell.exe's Console output after a reboot (I rebooted from OSX into W7):

OK, that is the same error report I got. If you do the following you can at least see if you have the same problem I had.

1. inside OSX open users/shared/nextlimit/rlm_nl/licenses/maxwell_suite_floating.lic and note the long string after HOST localhost (first line of license file). that should be the mac address for your computer.

2. launch Maxwell and let it report the error.

3. with Maxwell still open, open users/shared/nextlimit/rlm_nl/logs/maxwelllog.log, look for an error or a line where it states something like "a series of numbers" loaded or reported, "a series of numbers" expected.

4. if you find this line, and the loaded or reported number are your mac address from your .lic file, and the expected numbers are different that is a problem. I would look at these same values on the PC side.

Let us know.

Gary, thanks - but we are not using Maxwell under OSX, like I pointed out earlier. I will search for where "maxwelllog.log" resides under W7 to compare these lines...

I did not find "maxwelllog.log", but "nextlimit" in ProgramData > Next Limit > Maxwell > licenses > logs. It contains this text:

And in maxwell_suite_floating.lic I have this text:

HOST localhost 14109fda3e2e 5053

So, is this something related to the MAC address?

To fix my problem I changed the Mac address in the "maxwell_suite_floating.lic" to match the MAC address of my computer (save a copy of the original file). What is the correct MAC address of your computer, the one ending in "e" or "d"? If "d", change your "maxwell_suite_floating.lic" to match and see if it sticks.

As to why this is happening for you, unfortunately I can not offer any insight.

Cheers, I shall tinker with my license file then, making a copy of the old one before. Hope that does the trick. Looking up my MAC address under OSX, it's 14109fda3e2d - the one highlit in lilac above. Why it asks for 14109fda3e2e is beyond my understanding.

Cool— let me know if it works.

Just to be clear, you will change the "maxwell_suite_floating.lic" to end in 3e2d. It did take a full restart of system after modifying the file.

No joy. I manually changed 2e into 2d (which is how my MAC address ends) but still get the licensing error. Doing an ipconfig /all on the Windows 7 side gives me 14-10-9F-DA-3E-2D for MAC address, which is the same as on the OSX side.

So, the question then is, pertaining to the previous post, why the licenser log shows (expected: 14109fda3e2e, we are: 14109fda3e2d)? Why is it expecting a MAC address that does not exist?

The nextlimit DLOG file throws this up after the tinkering:

08/13 23:29 (nextlimit) RLM License Server Version 10.1BL2 for ISV "nextlimit"
08/13 23:29 (nextlimit) Settings from RLM Version 10.1BL2 for ISV "nextlimit"

So, I deleted all, reinstalled all... and am back with the licensing error on reboot or switch on as before : (

This RLM licensing is awful. I mean, Pro/E, Alias or ANSYS are seriously expensive and outrageously protected (license manager) products, but I never had a problem with my licenses there, going all the way back to the SGI (IRIX) days. And that is a long time ago.

Another beauty, when I select "Connect to the RLM License Server already running":

Sorry, I do not know what other help I can provide other than recommend prodding Nextlimit for more support. They should be able to confirm if this MAC address issue is or is not a problem. Have you tried emailing support?

Well, looks like I have to do that next.

I'm already dreading remote rendering (Team Viewer, RDP or other) when on the road with the laptop (that holds the RLM license manager), starting a rendering at the office and then travelling off...
