Please post here anything else (not relating to Maxwell technical matters)

I can appreciate that and certainly programs that work with geometry would be better suited for that task -- Substances are more or less geometry independent and would require some guidance from the texture artist as to how they would generate their dirt, rust, etc.

In an instance like what you are talking about you would need to create the UVs and basic texture painting before going into Substance Designer -- there you would have to design the Substance to have the parameters specific to your particular geometry... it can be done but I think it may not be much more efficient unless you were wanting to see many hundreds of variations of that same object.

I think Substances are at their most efficient when you are doing something like a large cityscape and need many variations of brick and concrete -- here you could use only a few Substances to texture most of the city and maintain a sense of uniqueness to each surface.

To put it another way -- I don't see substance as a "Hero" texturing tool... this is a great tool for just about everything else where you just need to get something unique on there fast, so you can spend more time really tweaking your "Hero" textures.

Best,
Jason.

Here's something interesting -- 50% off for Substance Designer or the Bitmap to Material Plugin for Max and Maya users: http://www.allegorithmic.com/store/special-offers

I should mention that I got close to 150 sample substances with my Substance Designer purchase and that Includes "Bitmap to Material" as well... so if you think you might be interested just the Substance Library alone would be pretty expensive to buy individually.

BTW, I do want to mention to be absolutely clear -- I'm just an enthusiastic fan of this new texturing tool, I have no affiliation with the company whatsoever.

Best,
Jason.

That is an interesting offer.

Just to clarify - this is not good for hero textures?

Or would it be worthwhile to use it to generate elements and layers (+ a little elbow grease assembling them) to make hero textures?

This was included in the $990 (pre discount)

or this was obtained by adding the $149 (pre discount) purchase as well?

---------

nevermind - That's the add on, I guess

Sorry about that -- I was out of the studio... anyway yes you could use it for "hero" textures if you so desired, however my inclination would be to use it for textures I used often and wanted to vary from scene-to-scene or from surface-to-surface. Once they are "baked" they are just like any other texture you would use in Maxwell and could be used/edited in the exact same ways.

To my reading the Bitmap to Textures plugin is a separate offer ($149 - 50% off) -- I was just pointing out that it does come included as part of the Substance Designer package as well (and it's more powerful there in some ways).

Best,
Jason.

I ordered the software. The bitmap thing is fun to play with - sort of an amped up Crazybump.

The substance designer license wizard is acting up (all buttons grayed out) and I assume I won't get to use that software until after the weekend.
