I don't totally agree with that. A web designer is much more efficient than I would be, so if you got no time but a little money to spend, I wouldn't do it myself. Besides that, you can get a much better site. Web design in these days is far more sophisticated than it was a few years ago.

It's kind of hard to understand what your graphic designer wants all that money for, since you didn't specify what your website has to supply.

There are a lot of open source solutions out these days, so you could spare the money on licenses and only have to pay for the work (shouldn't be much more than 2000$ imho)

if you have the nerve to do it yourself, it's an option then :)
same here ... I could not afford a web designer at the moment so I'm trying to get my page running with that limited html/css/php i got.

It is the programming and licensing that are eating up a large chunk of money. Somewhere between $4000- 5000 just for programming and licensing of the updating program then on top of that will be my graphic designers bill for the outline and look.

I think that my graphic designer will be pretty reasonable... I mean I think that it will still cost me a couple of thousand dollars for their time and input. My plan as of now is to have my graphic designer do the design layout of how things should look and then I would program or setup the actual pages.

No flash or animations just

Enter page with company logo
Main webpage with two options
Subcategories under each with thumbnails for images.

Then I want the ability to be able to update myself instead of emailing images and constantly tracking down a programmer to make sure that the updates are completed.

Hopefully it won't be too hard to accomplish!

but what is the licensing for?
the website you described can easily cost $2000, but surely not over $5000 I'd say

there...... you just dropped your budget from $2000 to .86 cents (plus shipping and handling)..... pain factor minimal :D

Hi Guys- yes the licensing is apparently for the updating software. It looks like I am going about it in a different way anyway so it won't matter in the long run. Thanks all for your kind replies and suggestions they are very much appreciated.

so what are they going to program? ¿?

...seems like they're "selling" you a joomla/mambo site (open source)

...are you going to make a flash/php/xml customized shop online or something like this?

...sounds too expensive for a simple portfolio work site with an updating control panel (if it's what you are asking for).
