certainly a core i7 cpu. phenom II is out as well but not really cheaper... and slower

if you are on a tight budget, find a decent (warranty  ) reseller in your area, and try to get a good offer. personally i don't like ordering pre built machines over the net (components yes), because shipping tends to be destructive

I use a "price comparison page", but it is german.. the cheapest offer with decent ram is:
Intel Core i7-920, 4096 MB RAM 662,--
http://geizhals.at/eu/?cat=sysnn;xf=632 ... 0i7&sort=p

you have to check graphics card .. most likely these cheap systems don't have a good card, but it also depends on you're 3d application.. 3dmax and rhino run fine with cheaper consumer cards (better get Nvidia here)

Get an AMD Opetron 285 or higher with a motherboard from Tyan that is compatible for dual processor 285 + 8 ECC RAM + 2 x SATA300 disk drive.

oopps....a Quadro FX 128MB is necessary also.

if you need a cheap system (<600€) you should consider to get an "old" quadcore system with q6600 (and overclock it).
something like this:

q6600 (boxed): ~160€
Mainboard for ddr2: ~60€
4GB ram ddr2: ~50€
hard disk: ~50€
Videocard: nvidia GF9800 or ATI 4850 - to be able to get passiv cooling ~100-150€ ...or a Quadro
case 500w: ~60€
dvd: ~20€
shipping: ~20€

=520-570€ (here in germany)

+ maybe a better (quieter) CPU cooler: +~50€
+ windows XP x64 or vista 64, if you need one: +~120€
+ eventually +4GB RAM: +~50€

but these prices are only possible if you build it on your own...
i think you should ask one or two local dealers - as polynurb said - and see what they can do...

thanx to everybody.
But wich is the difference between a computer with intel quad q6600 and AMD Opetron 285 (price, speed and overclock)?

i think the comment with that opteron 285 was not meant to be taken too seriously... more something like cheap outdated hardware to fit your tight budget.

...the speed of that opteron dual dualcore system and a q6600 sys is nearly the same. >>> http://www.benchwell.com/
but you have 2 dualcore processors instead of one quad = more watts = 2 fans/coolers = more noise... and you can't overclock it like a q6600 ;)

if i were you i would definitely pay a few hundred euros more and go for a core I7 sys - look at the benchwell numbers... i think it's worth it

+1, choose a Q6600, 4Go good ram, a motherboard with easy oc bios
Here i overclock it with the original CPU cooler @3ghz, and stay under 63°c (the max temp is 71°c)

thanx

By the way, do hard disks raid stripping increase rendering speed in maxwell?

If you stay under your Ram limits, hd speed doesn't count

that is not completely true. it can speed up the texture loading and opening of the mxs file before the rendering. and it'll slightly speed up the writing of the mxi during status updates (with Raid 0 not Raid 1 of course). So you'll get a tiny speed advantage, but the disadvantages are:
- if one discs out of the two breaks, you'll lose all your data
- it costs a lot of money

True Kami, it counts for scenes loading

Do you know how big the mxi file has to be, to make the purchase of a 15k HD reasonable?
I could have this one (but I don't know how much more expensive is a MB with SAS) for $180: Fujitsu 147GB 15000 RPM Serial Attached SCSI (SAS).
This is $140 more than a 7.2K 160GB common - and at the moment small - HD.
This money could be spent on a better CPU.
Like going from a Q8200 @ 2.33 to a Q9650 @ 3.00. (It is $160 at the moment, so $20 more).
Or even better, for $70 more ($210 difference), it is possible to move
from:
[Q8200@2.33 + GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3R + G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500)]
to:
[Core i7 920@2.66GHz + GIGABYTE GA-EX58-UD3R + G.SKILL 3GB (3 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666)]
Which choice is better?
How much work as to be done writing on the HD to prefer a faster one over a speed bump on the CPU?
