I found that nd value has more influence on SSS than I thought. And i didn`t find that in manual. I was testing it some time ago with closed box with one wall with SSS, emitter outside and camera inside...

I had an idea with simulating SSS and volume fog now when we have instancig. I was thinking about milions of instanced planes in x,y,z direction with ags material applied with very low roughness. This is for volume atmosphere and it can be used for SSS objects as well but there should be something to clip instanced planes with object borders...

Anyway I thought that Ivox has just Bruce Lee`s avatar :D

PA3K: That's interesting info, i have to give it a try and see what effect it has. Thanks

I know this one is very common, everyone has to make their own basketweave material atleast once in their lifetime so here's mine :D ..it's not finished yet, the colormap doesn't tile at the moment so it has a clearly visible tiling, other than that i'm quite satisfied with it.

Yep the tiling was a issue on that version, but i managed to pull of a nice trick and fix the tiling in that particular texture as it has a tailormade texture and not any regular wood texture like you normally find on these types of materials, yay! :) btw, thanks Brett.

I rendered 3 versions at the same time, they have in the order they're posted below the following tiling. 2x2, 3x3 and 4x4 tiling. I'll be posting this on the MXM site if anyone wanna play further with it and improve it even more.

hi everybody,

does anyone of you know if there is a chance to render displacement mappings, like you can render normal mappings with a C4D shader in cinema.

would be a nice way, than starting a hustle in photoshop.

thx

You could render the normal map and then turn it into a displacement map using Crazy Bump. Search for it in Off Topic section, it was posted a while ago.

You can use Maxwell Z buffer passes to create displacement maps.

This is a Maxwell z buffer pass which I used for displacement:- Image

hi max can i ask you if you use any procedural tools for your maps....especiaccly for the chainmail...or do you just use photoshop and gradients?

KRZ: Sometimes, it depends on what needs to be done. If there's a repeating pattern like you see in the chainmail then yep i use procedural materials from various programs that create these such as FilterForge, Texture Maker, MapZone, Genetica and ofcourse also Photoshop where usually half the work is done. And i also as most others use Crazybump, it's a nice and useful tool.

You can get a long way when creating materials by using these procedural generators, they can shave off hours of work you would otherwise spend on tedious Photoshopping a similar texture. :)

I just had to try your method Tim and it works very well! great suggestion to use zdepth maps. Thank you! :)

Here's my quick example using Jotero's Ajax model as a base, great stuff!

Ok this produced pretty sweet results so i just had to render out a bigger more powerful version :) it uses only a 8bit texture so it's not completly smooth. Displacement height is 64 units and precision is set to 128.

2 hours 24 minutes 47 seconds rendering, it rendered VERY slow.
