just to name a few remarkable achievements: cs1 supported 16bit files (sort of), while cs2 supports up to 32bit (which you can't convert to layers and blend, color correct, and actually work with, like you do in AE), and cs3 will enhance 32bit support, and will have smart filters (which look like what you have in AE).

Call me crazy, but those updates (IMO) are the kind of updates that we expect from Next Limit for free  ...

however, I do see fact that they didn't promise anything like victor did

... i think that's the point
all these nice new features of cs3 haven't been listed to be included in cs1.
...and adobe has already build in all necessary basic image editing functions since the first release.

but the new cs3 prizes are really insane... :?

Wandering in Adobe site I found out that a big part of the overpricing of Photoshop comes from its translated version. Buying from Spain store they charge 1042,84€ for spanish, italian, finnish versions, but 799,24€ for english one. Just FYI. :!:

Is that true? Would be really funny to purchase CS2 for free and upgrade to CS3 for 230€ instead of buying it right away.

It's actually more a matter of how much they can charge in the local market. People in the UK pay the most and that for an english version. Changing gray to grey and color to colour can't be worth double the price.

Charging for localization is just fair. But the whole action started by comparing english to english. And the european english versions aren't even 'translated' to european standards... gray remains gray even for the UK...

USD 649.00 = EUR 477.60

USD 1799.00 = EUR 1323.96

interesting detail: in Germany, a download is more expensive than a physical delivery. Seems like they really lost their math somewhere...

Yep, it's still a lot more (around 190%) than buying in US but at least is quite cheaper than the translated versions.

 It happens here too.

BTW I signed too.

in theory, adobe has cs32 ready for global deployment. you just won't see it until 2039. it's one thing if an upgrade is vastly improved from one version to the next, but adding a few new filters and export options is pure obsolescence.

here's a definition from wikipedia.

Planned obsolescence (also built-in obsolescence (UK)) is the decision on the part of a manufacturer to produce a consumer product that will become obsolete and/or non-functional in a defined time frame. Planned obsolescence has potential benefits for a producer in that it means a consumer cannot just buy a product once and never have to buy again - the life of the product's usefulness or functionality is fixed, so that at some point the consumer must purchase again, whether returning to the original manufacturer for a newer model, or buying from the competition. For an industry, it stimulates demand in the marketplace by ensuring a customer must come back into a buying mode sooner than had the product been built to last longer or indefinitely. It exists in many different products from vehicles to lightbulbs, from buildings to software. There is, however, the potential backlash of consumers that become aware of such obsolescence; such consumers can shed their loyalty and buy from a company that caters to their desire for a more durable product.

Planned obsolescence was first developed in the 1920s and 1930s when mass production had opened every minute aspect of the production process to exacting analysis.

Estimates of planned obsolescence can influence a company's decisions about product engineering. Therefore the company can use the least expensive components that satisfy product lifetime projections. Such decisions are part of a broader discipline known as value engineering.

You know this exact same discussion appears with every new Photoshop release. There are some pretty substantial changes in CS3, one of the most important being the ability to apply non destructive filters, which you can turn on/off at any time or change their settings. This is a pretty huge improvement and very practical as well.
