You might be interested to know that I did find a workaround for [64-bit WIndows XP]. It's very simple (doesn't involve any hacks of anything) and even a novice could use the technique in my opinion. The following target location works as well and points to My Computer showing a listings of hard disks.

Target: %windir%\syswow64\explorer.exe /separate, ::{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}

Start in: %windir%\syswow64

now to me this is chinese..what do i have to do? read this glibberish aloud while voodoo-dancing round my workstation? - thanx for your help

Here is what happens. You install carbonite normally in win64, then copy a shortcut for windows explorer (system menu), and paste in the above into the shortcut for explore. Then, that one shortcut will function like all explorers do in win32, showing the littel dots etc for carbonite and allowing you to select files.

so now it sits in C:\Program Files (x86)\Carbonite\Carbonite Backup

right? Right
then copy a shortcut for windows explorer (system menu)
a shortcut of CarboniteSetup.exe into No, copy a shortcut for Explorer.exe (not carbonite.exe) somewhere convenient for you (mine is on the desktop)

system?
sytem 32
SysWOW64?
and paste in the above into the shortcut for explore
how do i paste it in there?? Right click on your new explorer shortcut and select properties. You will see the 'target' field and the 'startin' field. Paste stuff in there. This 'version' of explorer becomes your gateway to seeing what carbonite is backing up and accessing the 'carbonite' item that lists all of your backed up files. It's working fine here!

thanx for your help - No worries :)

Just to add my 2 pence worth, I also lost a drive a couple of days ago, no warning whatsoever - thankfully it was the backup drive not the main one (the irony!) but you have my sympathies x_site, I've been there when the whole lot goes and its not much fun.

Because of this I recently spent some time trying to create a reasonably foolproof system and by using a NAS drive (glorified hard drive with built in ethernet if your wondering http://www.buffalo-technology.com/produ ... egoryid=35) with its own operating system for all my data I can set it to automatically copy its contents onto an attached USB drive every night completely independantly of the rest of my setup - ie no pc's need to be switched on, so you really can just forget about it.

I also use Nortons new 'Save and Restore' which at the moment looks to be the best thing out there for individual PC's - just to take a snapshot of the apps etc on my main working PC (it saves this to the NAS drive).

Hi Will,

Just goto control panel | add/remove programs, then find carbonite in the list and click 'uninstall'. (assuming your on a pc)
