I'd been thinking about trying out the 'mixing IOR file' method of metal creation. This thread convinced me to go ahead and do it... And that's the result I got.

Unless I'm just dumb, I couldn't find complex IOR files for straight up iron or carbon, so I used some of the slightly more exotic versions.

Here's the mixture I used:

fesi2el2.ior -- 88%
cr.ior -- 10%
ccl4.ior -- 2%

All channels are mapped exactly the same -- 50 roughness, 1 bump using this image:

(2048x2048 image file)

(The model is a bit on the chunky low-res side. I just ripped a piece out of an existing project and used it, and the piece was very, very small in the original context, and thus isn't very polygon dense)

Hah! Now I see that the CCL4.ior file I used is not a carbon derivative at all, but hexachloromethane. Neat!

...yeah, I thought I detected a hint of hexachloromethane in there...

Hi Zak,

That is a nice looking metal you got going there .

I imagine that working with an iron/chrome/hexachloromethane metal would be interesting. I envision explosions.

Nice to see your first test Zak :) I'm thinking it'd be useful to create an accurate metal collection which takes out the subjective judgements......probably impossible but got to try. :?

I suggest that we figure out which company has one of the devices used to make the measurements for complex IOR files, we figure out which Maxwell users are nearby, train them via e-mail and then kidnap someone with security access to the device and a briefcase full of material samples.

We need more IOR files!

sounds like a plan! Yes more ior files are needed, I seem to be missing a few also........is there a definitive list available anyone?

University labs will have spectroscopic ellipsometer for sure. I tried to find at local university in my area, and they have one, but am not sure if it can handle complete spectrum. I'm not sure if i will get hands on it (not a student anymore), but atleast i will get to understand how difficult it is to get your own IOR data.

material setting
BSDF carbam.ior
weight 0,05
BSDF cr.ior
weight 18
BSDF ni.ior
weight 9.5

nice example descry, how have you applied the brushed finish? Roughness channel or bump?
It looks like it's been brushed and then coated, reflections still too smooth maybe.......
