Yup, the only concern I have is this will become the new misused, overused feature of CG rendering

Like a few years ago, everything had to be rendered with SSS...
But honestly, you have lots of control of it via the aperture and obstacle maps (simple b/w images, for example a hexagonal white shape over a black background), and also via the intensity. You can make it really subtle, or completely crazy. It's just another level of realism....
Just to avoid confusion, you make your own aperture and obstacle maps, so you can have any shapes you want
