mike does that mean that rc 5 is going to have a manual for it. I just started using maxwell and would love to have a better manual.

There is a manual, yes, and to be honest, I haven't read through it yet... I'll be reading it tomorrow and making notes/revisions. But I thought an online visual reference would be useful as well.

Mike, take Monday off, get about twenty hours of sleep, eat a good meal, strap on the armor plating/asbestos underwear at about 9am PST Tuesday. Gather the valium and other support material. You will be getting either a zillion requests for help or a zillion knives thrust your way.

Either way, try to keep up the good spirits you have displayed in this mega thread. Good luck and may .... be with you. Organ music please, or is it a drumroll?

Keep that smile thru it all, Darth. :)

I'm going to give the most sophisticated opnion regarding the update that I can muster after having not slept due to my 2 year old son's inability to sleep last night...

DUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUDDDDE!!!!!

[EDIT] Ok, I've had some coke (the drink people, relax), did about 2 pushups (which is all my fat ass can handle) and looked at it again.

It would be nice to see a slightly more robust scene. There is a visible difference in the quality of th preview render versus the full render (most noticably in the shadows).

Material editor/browser looks promising. Hopefully we can still substitue the preview file with our own simple geometry.

Adehus, I would think that the new release of rosetta and the Core based Macs might have thrown a few monkey wrenches in their way.

I don't see why... Intel Macs aren't really out there yet- it would make no sense to compromise the progress on the PPC version because of them.

Besides, there's no Intel inside of the Mac pro desktop offering.
I understand :D just saying that now they have a dilemma.
What to do. port it for straight OSX now or take a bit longer and have it compatible with rosetta?
Hopefully they see it like you, it will take time to have the desktop Core chips and the Mac Pro will probably not be updated until then.

Now this isn't usually my style, but...

I'd like to remind you that now you're worrying about whether software that isn't available yet will be native on a computer you don't have yet. There's got to be something better too be doing with the time.

PRE-FLIGHT
  • I don't know when RC 5 will be released. I would bet late in the evening, GMT+1 (Madrid time).
  • We tested the full installer late yesterday and had a few recommendations. I know efforts are being made to try and make the install process as simple as possible.
  • The only plug-in I have personally seen or tested is the Maya plug-in. In Maya, you can assign "old style" materials and custom emitters (No Kelvin lights) and render as normal or export your .mxs. If you try and make a material that uses currently disabled features, like SSS, they won't work. Because you won't have access to the majority of new material features, I would highly recommend you export your raw geometry to Studio and assign materials and render from there.
  • Reality Check: "RC" is code for "Beta Software". Beta software is not feature complete, and some features will be disabled. There are a great number of additional features and improvements already in the works. Because it's beta software, you will find things that are unstable. Usually if a feature isn't working properly, it has been disabled. One exception is anisotropy. Currently, anisotropy works in many cases, but not in others. It has been left enabled anyway for you to test.
  • The most productive use of your energy is to use the software and report your wishes and bugs. That's the point of beta testing, and Maxwell is once again in public-beta mode. Which is a good thing.
  • You will most likely find much or most of your old scenes translate well. In other cases, they will render quite differently. This is normal. Take time to learn how to use the new Maxwell before freaking out.
  • I'll be around from time to time to answer questions about how to use Maxwell RC 5, and I'll be testing the next generation of improvements.
  • I do not have any information about the next releases/updates of Maxwell, and you won't have to ask for any: as soon as I know, you'll know.
  • Have fun! It's supposed to be fun. It's an amazing piece of software, and RC 5 is a solid release. Maxwell is growing up, and moving on. I hope we all can, too.
See you after the release...

_Mike

***UPDATE 7:30 p.m. GMT+1***

Apparently, last-minute "demo version" features are being disabled, after which the release will commence. No final word on Mac version, yet, though last I heard there were still some persistent issues needing resolution for maximum stability.

***UPDATE 9:00 p.m. GMT+1***

No report on release yet. While you're waiting, why not have a Coke? Coke: It's the Real Thing.
