This is all i get after i export. The processor works like crazy, but no rendering shows up. It says alpha in the window, but maxwell is in beta now, does that mean sketchup is trying to render in an older version of maxwell lying around on my computer. But I´m pretty sure I deletet it before installing this one.

The problem was I still had an old alpha maxwell plug-in in the plug-in folder of cinema 4D. So when I opened a .mxl file it automatically opened in the old version. I deleted the C4D plug-in and bingo, everything works like a charm.

No I didn´t experience this. As soon as I deleted the old version, everything started to work. If you want you can send the sketchup file to me and I´ll try to export it. At least then we can find out if theres something wrong with the file or with the maxwell installation.

Please make ‾/.MacOSX folder.
Copy environment.plist to that folder.
If you are not doing it.

If it is unrelated, I'm sorry.

Greetings ...

I have the same config (almost 1.67G4 powerbook) with SU5 and I get the exact same "results" - crashed Sketchup and no render, same message in the log file.

Any advice out there?

Good night all

It is an old installation method.

SkpToMXS.plugin had succeeded before installing the latest version(G4 1.2.2a beta Sep 08 05).
I was installing the previous version(G4 1.2.2a beta not Sep 08 05).

I deleted ‾/.MacOSX folder, and installed the latest version.
Double-clicking the MXS file succeeds. Terminal succeeds. C4D succeeds, too.
However, SketchUp failed.

I make ‾/.MacOSX folder, copy environment.plist, and it goes well now (excluding a few problems).
By the way, SketchUp fails after delete ‾/.MacOSX folder, log out and log in.

My method was not useful for you and I am regrettable.

I've mentioned it in other threads but I will repeat it here:

If export crashes and you get following report in the log file:

Exporting: /Users/jason/Desktop/tomato-1.mxs.log
Maxwell: Method setPhysicalSky, Error: Maxwell not initialized
Maxwell: Method createCameras, Error: Maxwell not initialized
Maxwell: Method Camera export, Error: createCameras

it means that you do not have Maxwell engine installed properly on your machine. The best test for the installation is to locate rbg.mxs file (sample file included with Maxwell engine) and double click on it - that will render the file in Maxwell. If that works, MaxwellExport for SketchUp will work as well (you should see 3 cubes in red, green, blue in the Maxwell image when rendering the file). If the Maxwell rendering doesn't work than you should re-read the installation instructions.

Dear Pavol & co...

Do you think you could post a working environment file for us? I think this might be easier for us all - I can change things but I don't have the right file needed. Oh the frustration! It seems there are at least a few people out there who have no problem with the maxwell engine but who cannot get the exporter to work.

Perhaps this would be a good solution - post the working file, then we will know if it all works.

thanks in advance and best wishes to all from Berlin,

Jason

Dear All -

For the record, I got it to work and discovered what was it seems a known "bug" if you will call it that. It seems that the problem had to do with a non-expected location for the application - not only must the environment.plist file be in the right place, it must (of course) point to the current location of Maxwell.app . I had moved the app (I still organize my Application folder...) and the plugin could not find it. So, in fact it was an "installation" issue; though the suggested test (to run rgb.mxs) did not indicate this.

Thus, the suggestion for future people with this problem: for now, don't move the app anywhere! And yes, check the environment.plist file:

(quoted from Pavol):

"the solution (as far as I can tell) is to update the environment.plist if you've moved the Maxwell application bundle.
You will need to edit the environment.plist file to take into account a new location. Typically if you had:
<string>Applications/maxwell.app/Contents/MacOS</string>
you will need to change it to (assuming you've moved to render folder):
<string>Applications/render/maxwell.app/Contents/MacOS</string>

That should help.

NextLimit developers are aware of the installation problem - they've promised a new version of SDK which should simplify the process and make it more stable. As soon as I have the new version of SDK I will follow up with a new version of MaxwellExport for SketchUp plugin.

Hope this helps.

Pavol"

Although, in my experience, this did not work (!) - logic would suggest it could.

At the moment, I still have a problem in that I can't get the command line system to run. This could be because of my own lack of knowledge but I still believe there is a missing link somewhere...

good luck to all,

Jason

I hope these instructions for creating/placing environment.plist will help...

1. Start Finder
2. menu - Go/Go to Folder - a dialog appears.
3. enter: ~/.MacOSX and push Go button (note that this is a system folder - it is hidden in Finder)
4. you have 2 options:
- folder exists - finder opens a window with the content of the folder
--- copy environment.plist from Maxwell bundle there
- folder doesn't exist (you get "The folder cannot be found" message)
--- Start Terminal from Applications/Utilities
--- type in cd ~
--- type mkdir .MacOSX
--- close Terminal
--- repeat the step with Go/Go to Folder command...

Note that the need to work with environment.plist should be lifted in the next build - Maxwell developers has changed the internal mechanism in SDK for handling the Maxwell locations so that should improve the situation...

Dear Pavol, Dear SDK masters,

This is indeed great news. I think the engine should be a more painless install, and I appreciate that you have heard and reacted to the critique. Bravo!

Now, I think the next step is to work on the elegance of the set-up. In my opinion, DOF still is very "iffy" - I have not gotten it to work, and also the general handling (interface) of the SU plugin is fairly difficult, with important features buried within menus-inside-menus. This has been exhaustively handled in other threads, but I sincerely hope that Pavol will be given the time/resources to devote to making the plugin-in system for SketchUP as elegant and intuitive as SketchUP itself. This would be real magic.

Best to all,

Jason

would anybody be so kind as to post a file that I can render with maxwell, just something simple I can play with. I have re-re-re-re installed the software but exporting from Sketchup will simply crash SU. I have tried to make a ~/MacOSX folder but my terminal says that commands like cdir.MacOSX is a false command etc.

I must say that Next Limit is one of the worst companies I have ever found in my Mac life that has a almost 20 years experience. I can only hope Next Limit will be taken over as quick as possible by any proper software house who has people on its staff who can handle customer support in a more appropriate way. I am sure Next Limit is way too small and too inexperienced to steer this rendersucces to a commercialy sound product. It drives hordes of customers over the wall and leaves a trail of bad publicity while celebrating pictures of each day.

typed in the right commands as well as mentioned above and it still doesn't work.
Was angry last night but ok, I will wait.

Actually when you install Maxwell for about 5 times you see how simple it really is. Two plugins and some information in a textfile and that's really all. It doesn't work and then things get complicated. Maxwell runs fine, its just the plugins that don't work.
