Yes, that is done by automxm linking, that is linking materials by name. A SU material named XYZ would on export be replaced by an mxm, if there is one called XYZ.mxm. Make sure automxm is enabled in the export options.

can you explain a little further.. let say I have a SU material call XYZ and a mxm call ..\Next Limit\Maxwell\materials database\mxm files\leo mxm\XYZ.mxm

do I need to put in automxm
"..\Next Limit\Maxwell\materials database\mxm files\leo mxm\"
or
"..\Next Limit\Maxwell\materials database\mxm files"

and I imagine, this will not erase my mxm library and replace it with SU materials right???

Just keep the path to "..\Next Limit\Maxwell\materials database\mxm files\" . The path just narrows down the search area to everything below the given location, so it won´t search your entire drive for every material.

Both skm and mxm will be intact, I hope. :)

The best way to use automxm is to create a skm using the diffuse map (ref 90 map) of your mxm. This way it is easy to position and scale properly in SketchUp, and you may also want to use the SU image style in some cases. Save the new skm in a new library, and you can build up your automxm libs for use in future projects.

By the way, just to avoid confusion, when you are assigning an mxm or conversionwizard settings from the materials panel of su2mxm, you are assigning it to the Su material, not to the object. That info is saved only in the current scene, but not in the SU materials library. So you need to use automxm if you want to store the mxm link for future use.
