The mxcl.exe text is an harmless bug, and it can be ignored. Your jpg not being saved is not related to that.
Look at what the Console tab says when rendering. It coluld say why it is not saving. Illegal filename or invalid path? In Studio it does that if you forget to write .jpg after the filename, but not in the plugin.

The beta style mateials were finally droped from the UI, and it is all mxm now.
The editor and wizard launch very slowly, it takes 35 seconds on my computer. (Ruby limitation I think).
It is better to launch the editor separately from the startmenu, it will stay on top. The wizard and presets are accessible from the editor.
