Sheik wrote:I’m glad you have the bumps working! With the settings above you are not supposed to see the texture as you are only using the SU texture for the bump. The colour is the colour of the SU material.
To add the texture go to Maps/ Set Diffuse and locate the antique brick texture in your SU material folder (located under your SU installation folder). Always remember settings only affect the selected faces. Now render.
(The same would happen if you have SU Material Type as Diffuse and then add the same texture as Bump Map. The texture assigned to the SU material can only be used for one map type in su2mxs. Adding the other textures works just the same way).
Sheik,

I can get just the bump map to work using the method you described earlier, but I still can't get both the bump map and texture to both display. In the step you described above to get the texture to display, I assume you meant go to Maps/ Pick Diffuse Map and locate antique brick texture. I did that, but it still didn't add the texture. I must still be doing something wrong or missing a step. If you have time, it would be great if you could recap the steps and post an example. Any more help you could give would be greatly appreciated. TIA.

You are right; the diffuse map doesn’t show like I said. This is a bug! You have to do it the other way around: Set SketchUp Map Type to Diffuse and then Pick Bump Map and select the bumping texture. I am working on a tutorial…

messire,

No, you can’t just drop a .jpg into the SU materials library. Here are the steps to add a material to the library.

1. From the material browser, select ‘create’ button.
2. If you have a .jpg to use, check the ‘use texture image’ box and browse to your image and open it.
3. Create the proper scale for you texture by specifying in the height/width boxes.
4. In the upper left box, give your new material a name.
5. Once you get everything just right, select ‘Add’.
6. Your new material is now added to your current model, but not in your material library for new models. To add it to your material library, right click on the material you just made (in the material browser) and select ‘add to library’. When you close the material browser it will notify you the material library has been modified and ask you if you want to save changes. If you click yes, your new material will be added to the material browser.

Muttlieb, thnx!
Its really NOT easy stuff.. It means how will i move all my previous libraries to SU.. one by one ... wow scary thought!!
There should be a way to load jpg's and then maybe adjust them once u need them!
.. back to the topic!

It's really not all that hard to do, but yes, it is very time consuming. I totally agree it should be as easy as dropping into folder/loading them and adjust as needed. Maybe in SU6?

its not hard indeed ;) i meant its not drop and run stuff ... one by one is a bit long, even if its quick each time!
Maybe in SU6! :)

Muttlieb,
Try setting different maps for diffuse and bump. Like this you can clearly see if the bump is there or not.
Make a box. Paint the top with “Cherry-Wood” (in the SU wood library).
Make the top plastic by selecting the face and selecting Plugins/Maxwell export/ Set Plastic..ok. Now (with the top face still selected) go to Plugins/Maxwell export/Maps/Pick Bump Map and find fence.jpg in the materials folder (under the SU installation folder).
Now go to Plugins/Maxwell export/Maps/Set Map. Make sure the SketchUp Map Type is Diffuse and in the Bump Strength field enter 40. Click Ok.
Render (for at least 10 minutes).
You should now see both the wood texture and the bump. Ok now? It should look like this:

I won’t have time to complete the tutorial this weekend, so I will post the Alpha version of it, if you would want to try it now. http://www.sketchup.com/forum/read.php? ... 60&t=63260

Sheik,

Thanks! I finally got it to work! I'm still having a hard time figuring out the logic behind why it works, but that will come. And I took a quick look at your tutorial and it looks great. Very helpful indeed. Again, thank you very, very, much.

This is a test of su2mxs on a Aalto lamp and som Form Fonts models.

I left this rendering over the weekend, and it still has some noise. It will be fun to see how much faster 1.0 will be on this one...

I will miss the noise when it’s gone. I have sometimes started considering it a friend.
Image
This is a 4 min render of a chessboard from Formfonts. I just converted it to duotone.

The other one rendered for 10 hours before crashing. Maybe I won’t miss the noise all the time…
Image
Can you spot what is wrong in the picture?

I used a sky dome created in Vue. Setup time was approximately 15min. (su2mxs b06)

I feel kind of silly being the only one posting here. Where are all the others posting their su2mxs pics?

Sheik, that first render of the chess board is pretty cool. I agree, at times the noise adds a really nice effect. Soon, we'll be running our renders through a noise filter to get it back  I'd like to be posting some of my examples, but I just haven't had time to play with maxwell lately.

Actually, I always add noise and watercolour filters in Photoshop, even just a little can give most renderings that are not ment to be fully photorealistic a lot more interesting to look at.

Wish I could use my Maxwell like you guys cause mine is still not working. Got a lot of promises though from Next Limit as they are aware that its rather a matter of luck if you can get Maxwell to run under OSX on a G5 from Sketchup. Pitty really, for me the Maxwell experience turned into an anti climax. Its nice to see others do fine, thats makes me stick around a while although I must say that from Skecthup users theres not so much to see.

Are there any female modelers around, I am not joking of course and it would be nice to see some renderings that have a more feminine touch.

ok thanks for explaining. actually I do copy the T[…]
