Sorry, this isn't a reply to your problem - more a similar experience. I am also having problems rendering a rather large scene, and my question to the Maxwell crew would be: what are the primary reasons for a crash, or put another way, what are the things in our models we should be careful about?
I'm doing a render right now that has:
Num meshes: 702
Num Triangles: 2327931
Num Vertexes: 1198669
Num Normals: 696661
Resolution: 983x359
2 threads
on a 3.0 Ghz Win machine with 1GB of Ram
