I get this occassionally and the node won't do any work. Sometimes the render node starts up properly and works fine. Any insight into what causes this error?

Should mention that the node shows up in the monitor as just an ip address (the node's name doesn't come up) and the OS info is missing. Jobs don't get sent to the node.

It looks like something is already using those ports. Another instance of the node already running on a different user account? Another app....

This is possible... I tried to set it up so the render node would start automatically on boot. I'm really novice with linux and it didn't seem to work and I forgot about it. Undid what I did previously, seems to be working now.
