Yep - excellent detailing in the model so far. I know what you mean about getting maps out of Zbrush though - I don't use C4D but I've had problems with Max in that regard. Best of luck with it :)

hey Maximus, this is a nice upgrade... do you use a tablet to paint in Zbrush..? stamps... patterns..? dunno... I am using Mudbox.. anyway... cheesy... com'on don't be shy.. this is excellent !

Maybe a scratch or two on the leather.. 8)

JC: Yeah i know the procedure to export the displacementmap, but in reality to get it to work once you reapply your map to your lowpoly cage is a whole different matter as it seems often that UV's are trashed along the way or messed up in various ways. I'll dive deeper into solving this somehow today, hopefully there's a way to fix it or else this leather sculpting has to be ditched. And.. thanks! :)

def4d: :D hehe, this wip thread will probably work as a tutorial if you read between the lines. In a way..

Ivox: Thank you Chris :) i'm trying, we'll see if i can do what i say i can do. Hopefully i won't let myself down on this.

Brett: Thanks! :) mm yep it's a real bitch sometimes to get it to work well, but i have plenty of time now to solve this and i am going to find the solution. The problems can be pretty much the same in 3dsmax as they can be in C4D :) i need all the good luck wishes i can get now hehe

Hervé: Thank you! :) i don't own a tablet, unfortuntely. But i wish i had one. Until that day comes i'm sculpting with my old mouse. It sucks for this but what can one do.. i'll be tossing in a few scratches in the leather surface and also fix the leather around the four holes at the top part of the mesh today as i've done a poor job sculpting those parts last night.

Thanks all of you, you're all to kind! :) i'll be back during the day with some sorta updates once i have something worth showing off here.

very detailed sculpting Maximus!!

I really want to see the final images.. hurry! :D

It would be a shame if you had to discard that Z-brush session though :(

Just an idea maybe it helps; If i remember correctly you also workwith rhino;
i did some displacement tests and got a little into that tweaking of uvs on nurbs surfaces. Basically the advantage might be that if you model the leather piece out of a single put over nurb cylinder (the seam could be hidden on the inside) your texture coordinates would be more stable (as long as you keep the control point spacing even across the surface); and the resulting mesh would have it`s welding applied according to the surface curvature at a given point.you could create a simple black map for the inside of the leather, combine it with the other displacement and map the entire texture onto a "surface" type projector.
This also keeps you from hard edges in the base mesh, which i sometimes find difficult to deal with when using displacement.

well.. i`m confident that you manage one or the other way!

good luck!

This is really looking awesome, Max!

What part of moving between ZBrush and Maxwell is causing you problems?

I'm pretty close to putting together a tutorial, I might be able to help.

Hervé: Thank you, but i cannot afford a tablet :( hopefully someday i'll be able to buy one. But food has a bit higher priority now.

polynurb: Thanks and this is medium detailed sculpting, it's only 2,7 million polys so not that super high. I'd also like to see what this would look like once rendered, but i'm afraid i'm stuck at a place and i can't get past this obstacle.

Hm, interesting suggestion to use nurbs. I'll see what if anything i can do about that. Thanks! :)

Voidmonster: Thank you! :) what causes problems is that my Modo created UV's get destroyed in ZB and once i export my displacmentmap back out to C4D and Maxwell and reapply it to my basemesh the rendered result looks absolutely horrible. I also tried by exporting out the lowpoly mesh created in ZB to C4D and apply my map onto that, no luck there either. And i tested with GUVmaps from ZB, no luck with those. Only solution i see possibly working is to export a medium poly version of this leather piece which has about 700,000 polys in it and then map that and render. But with this method i will loose alot (all) of the fine surfacedetails the leather now has. Or i might just ditch this whole project and do something else instead, something easier and something i can finish. :)

Unfortunately as a result of all these issues i have nothing new to show.

First off, here are the settings I use for the displacement exporter in ZB3.1:

32 bit: DE-JCFK-EACADA-D32
16 bit: DE-FCFK-EACADA-D16

I use the 32 bit exports ... for no real good reason. I can't tell any quality difference, but theoretically there is one.

Also, you do know that ZBrush textures are flipped on the V axis, right?

If that stuff doesn't get ya there send me the ZTool and I'll try and get it working right.

Voidmonster: Thanks for the settings, i got the same one's here i use. 32bit works better although it's difficult to see any real difference on small displacement beights, on higher displacements you can/should see a difference. Yeah i know ZB displacementmaps need to be flipped. :) thanks for your kind offer to help me out and your suggestions and tips.

Time to kickstart this thread again and resume work on this knife wip i started a while back, i'm sorry about the delay but i ran into a brickwall with getting displacements and UV's from Modo to C4D and to Maxwell but the issues i had are now resolved as many of you seen in my recent threads in the MXM section of the forum.

Here's a few latenight tests on my relative lowpoly basemesh of the leather part, it's 42,720 polys. I guess that qualifies it as a mediumpoly mesh.. anyhow, the leathermaterial is temporary until i painted some proper textures for it. But the displacement is correct, it maps nicely and renders fast even in adaptive mode yay! btw, the Zbrushed version has 2,73 million polys for those who wanna know the numbers.

Btw, i should probably tweak the sculpting some more before i finalize it.

More updates will come soon..

Max, last images are really feeling real...
when comes the renders ? can't wait !

does it take more time to do the knife in real or 3d ? :P

So, is this a known issue?
