It's flat cause as i said, i wanted to have all the model in my Z-buffer, so it lets less grey levels for the details
I could have only render half of the model, and i would have it more detailed or "round", but in that case, i would have loose the right arm, and a piece of the tail!
Hope it's clear, in regard of my "english" :?

Z-buffer and my gradient trick gave the same results though!

That's not dinosaur skin, thats brain tissue. Nice material as allways, though

def4d: Sorry, my mistake for misunderstanding what you wrote. But now i understand what you mean. I think you could get away with only the half of the model present in your depthmap as you would mirror the plane and map to render the other half of it. However it's good to see your trick working aswell as Tim's trick. :) now we have two tricks, yay!

trofaster: Correct, change the color to a more pinkish one and this would work as a brainmatter material. I noticed that during the creation of this but i went for the dinoskin anyways. Thanks :)

Yep, 3ds max it's easier to just use a gradient map copied to diffuse and self-illumination, then you can render out what you want using the uvw mapping. Ie, go to half the depth and get more resolution over a small range of topology etc.

Never really thought of using the Z-bugger for displacement maps :o

The object is just modeled with some thickness and the mapped so that both sides match. The rest is just displacement. Needs some more work to become useful though...

Experimenting with some cut glass crystal displacements. Image has been sized down by 40% and took about 16 hrs to render on a 8 core MacPro. For comparative reasons I put the two objects together, one with actualy geometry and the other with a displacement. I did have dispersion turned on which resulted in a noiser final output. These are just initial tests.
