It's a core problem. Faster, I guess, but worst in quality, I'm very concerned by this light issue, seems like it calculates only 1 bounce.
This is no way physically correct!!!

Frances, I agree, what really scares me is that nextlimit staff is boasting about how fast and optimized is the new core, when is totally broken.
please someone from nextlimit explain this!

Even in Studio preview with 6 bounces, it is no better. And the bounce control widget does work.

I am currently re-rendering this scene and it is working now under RC3.

Here is current result from RC3- all I did was load the mxs and hit render under RC3.

Currently:

Still investigating...

I know this will sound mean, but here it goes. Are some people in such denial about the quality the RC is putting out. How many brutal images must our eyes be assuaulted by before people accept the new core is FUBAR. For those who still don't realize how bad this is here is a comparison I did between an old alpha file, and a RC. The light looks like total ass!! I am confident they will fix this though. I will take slow and nice over fast and crap any day. Wake up and smell the coffe people. (End Rant) Sorry I don't like to be like this, but this is very frustrating after seeing how nice this engine was cabable of. Im not mad at anyone just frustrated. I want this to be a good product...........especially since I already paid for it. Actually the top image was done in the Beta, not alpha.

This is what frustrates me. If they would just say yeah we know its messed up, and we are going to fix it, I would be content. Instead they have just been talking about the studio, and the material editor. What good is all of this if the image quality is fast but horrible. Can anyone from NL please confirm that the light distribution will be equal to the beta or alpha in the coming RC's?

interesting post. i was wondering why the lights are hard to get right
ive just done a test with RC3 and the c4d plugin. the sheep scene with the same setup as beta is very very dark, infact in the beta i had one emitter set to 100W and in the RC3 to get anywhere close i need to set the same emitter to 1000W

right here is my test
one on the left is the beta and the emitter set to 100W and the one on the right is the rc3 and c4d plug, same emitter but set to 500W. both cameras are set up the same and the scene is the same. so i for one can confirm that something isnt right
oh and the new RC 3 sheep has new RC3 c4d materials applied to it hence why the ears are different coloured
