Wow, I hope we get this effect regular.
yes in my test the sss was applied with diffuse mat as well... pretty fast... I mean at least I don't see an increase if I turn sss down to 0 or to 1...

and if you apply sme colorful images to the sss surface it does pretty things.... he he..

hervé, i'm having the same effect in max. not testing your scene here, still the fog/glow effect is the same. in my case i have a simple emitting sphere within a diffuse sss sphere in a diffuse room, as long as i can tell with no room around there's no fog effect, with the room it starts to appear (i'll post a picture soon, it's taking ages to render).

anyway, i've seen this effect before but didn't pay attention till now, have a look at this thread:

Yes I've seen this thread... so in fact this is a pretty natural fx.... cool... I hope we'll get something at least similar in fianl release.... thanks Rivoli... and yes post your render when finish....

But what if you still want to use sss but don't want this glow, which looks pretty strong? I guess it has to do with the size of the enclosure, I bet if you use a bigger room the effect will weaken and small enclosure will make a stronger effect.....

yes maybe, but the fx can be set very subtle if you make lower values...

give me a case where you need sss on a surface that is supposed to be lit to become transparent like a neon tube... I mean with a normal lamp shade where the emiter (usually a ball to simulate the light bulb) is far form the actual shade... it does not show up or sooo subtle you won't even notice...

yes, it may be. anyway, here's what i got, not as strong as hervé's but still you can see some light scattering around (especially in the preview).

Hmmmm... err... mmm.. Tom could you tell us if it is a normal feature, and will it be present in Maxwell 1.0... .... would you..?

I mean I did a test with a big room with many paintings on wall and small lamps... and it rocks... wil do more tests... but at the condition that it stays in Maxwell 1.0... otherwise I am waisting my time here... capish

hey... I think that rocks... and if you let it longer it will rock even more...

just curious, what have you put in front of the reflector, a simple polygon or does it has some volume.... could be the reason why not so strong... , but as far as I can see, it looks very natural... and way cool... hehe

actually is a cone with some thickness (lampshade like) that contains the two spheres (red one is the sss one and white one is the emitter):

interesting effect. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to work if you use dielectric in front of your emitter : white dots all over (I'm trying to model a fresnel spotlight). I'll will let it render a little longer to be sure, but I'm afraid it's still the sss behind dielectric bug.
