i have modeled my spot as Olitech explained, but you can see the resulting squares :?
I understood that both the cylinder and the reflector inside must be a 100% reflective plastic material (so a perfect mirror), or am i wrong?
Like me, it seems that you made your ball with a sphere, and the problem is we don't obtain square mirror on the poles, anyone has a tip to model it perfectly?

Morbid angel : your idea of the mirror ball is great!

I just modelled one with instances of squares on the sphere, so you get (almost) rectangular squares all the way to the poles:

It's also only about 6500 polys. I didn't finish it at the poles, but you can easily add a couple squares there. The model contains all the squares plus a separate sphere which you should give a very dark diffuse mat.

When modeling lighting and optical equipments, I usually prefer coal coated shells for preventing multiple reflections. For reflective parts, it's ok using 100% specular plastics. I quickly modeled the ball from primitive sphere, so it's not the original discoball but it's just for demonstration. It should be modeled with equal squares on circular paths but I didn't want to waste time with it. I see Mihai already achieved it well with scattering over poles. ;)

I propose any future renderer comparison MUST contain a disco ball somewhere :D

Nice work tom!

With more demands, I can also model all the disco even with dancing people :P

Thank you olitech!
It was possible with alpha once but temporarily disabled for technical
reasons and will be available again. It's atmospheric fog. ;)
