It could use placeholder objects, like mental ray, and hd method, like Maxwell, etc.

Well, I thought on PPT mode it works like Maxwell... (can someone please correct me if this not so ?)

Also, their upcoming camera sounds like this:
It simulates a real-world camera complete with a lens system. You can specify dimensions of the film, focal length of the lens, IOR and shape of the lens, f-stop etc. The main difference is that you can the image distortions that you get with a normal camera, complete with the accurate depth-of-field effect (e.g. the image is less blurred in the center than it is at the edges etc). V-Ray actually goes on to simulate the rays being refracted through the lens

I second that :) lets have both.
It pains me when a client asks me to change the colour of a wall, with Maxwell I have to rerender the shot. If I could simple change the colour of the wall and load up a cached GI map, irradiance map, whatever file and hit render again. Sure I would haven't the absolute correct lighting but it beats the hell out of rendering maxwell from scatch.
Also render passes and object passes would be good to.

For a lot of us it seems the whole Vray debate is pointless.. Unless I'm mistaken in assuming it's a MAX only product. As a Lightwave user VRAY is useless, no matter how well it compares with Maxwell

actually vray standalone has been shown at siggraph, along with the maya version.

not really, here's what vlado said about it:

Our goal for the show was to demonstrate the V-Ray core working completely outside and independently of 3dsmax. In the end, you would be able to take your scene, export it from 3dsmax into a V-Ray scene file format, and use the standalone version to render it. You can even tweak rendering parameters by directly modifying the scene file, without the need to use 3dsmax at all.

Rivoli,

that sounds suspiciously like you still need to work with Max...

Though, if they do this I suspect a LW, Cinema, etc. scene converter wont be far behind.

but I have maxwellrender... what would I need VRAY for.

We're testing the standalone, and it's really good. There's a way to output your scene that could be ported to other apps, I think. The other thing about standalone is that you can use Vray in a renderfarm with other apps, all controlled by a queue manager like LSF, Royal Render, etc. This will make Vray a viable choice for big production houses where a few apps may have to coexist. With the plugin version, this isn't possible.

DavidR, how are the materials handled? If you have to change something to your scene (add/delete/change objects, change textures), how is that handled in the standalone? Do you apply all material settings in your host app?

You can change things in your app, of course, but the file created for the standalone to render is similar to an .mi in that you can open it with notepad, and I assume, make changes directly. I looked at a file to check this, but haven't tried making changes via notepad. Some is hexadecimal, but most is exactly like an .mi, so I don't see why you couldn't change material colours, lighting values, etc without using Max or whatever. This is beta, so I'm not sure what the future holds, but I think a lot of people are going to be happy with this.
