Any features you'd like to see implemented into Maxwell?

Well I am only giving my opinion, that may be wrong as I am not aware of all the 64-bit ported products and how they compare with their equivalent 32-bit versions.

I would like to say that there is some kind of marketing strategy that pretends to impose the equation: 64-bit = faster, but I don't see that point.

64-bit hardware has been created to jump over the 32-bit limit for memory addressing, that is the famous 4 Gb. For me, 64-bit allows to manage huge dataset impossible to handle before. Do we always need this? Depends on the application.

Now Maxwell can handle 4-5 millions in 2 Gb. With a 64-bit machine and memory we can rise to any incredible amount of triangles. However, speed performance will not scale in the same way.

In our short experience with 64-bit platforms, we haven't got a significative increase in performance, but this may change as long as we keep working on them.

64-bit, 128-bit, whatever doesn't mean 'faster'. It just means that will address more memory, but we also have to look at the floating point units, paralelization schemes, compiler options, cache size, bus speed, if the code is well adapted to 64-bit structures, etc, etc. Take away from your minds the idea of 'more bits = faster'

If that's how it works then it would probably be a more optimal solution to aim future revisions of Maxwell to be adapted for dualcore based systems and then later on for 64bit if necessary since at the moment you don't gain as much from 64bit right now. Doing that way you would make the product futuresafe and ready for when people start moving on to dualcore systems. :)

...

i am mac user too... but at least for me it's clear that we really can be «glad» that maxwell is even developed for macs... there's only 3% macs vs. 97% pcs and other systems on the market...

plus: did You ever hear about one other true 64 bit application running on a mac??? why should maxwell that still is in alpha phase?

hopefully there will be a maxwell 64-bit in the future...so I think maybe in one year :lol:

I only made a test last year.
I installed autocad11 16 bit for DOS on a P4 and it was 200% faster as autocad 2000 32bit in almost all functions. File loading was 300% faster.

cinema 4d gives a good 20% performance gain with the 64bit version.

i was amazed too, exsoecially because maxon said befoe that 64bit wont give any more speed. i guess they whare amazed themselves....

but good for c4d users, the 64bit c4d is a lot faster.

cheers

i have both x64 and 32 installed and i was curious if i would see an inprovement. using max 7 i set up a simple sceen with some tourus shapes(about 20) 4 sphear emiters, phisical sky and rendered them using both os

win32 = 15 samples, 182min

x64 = 15 samples, 121min

now it is probalbly due to the ram but also x64 not only can handle more ram, it processes it faster and the chips work more efficiently.

system used

dual 3.6 xeon emt64
8gig ram
dual nvidia 3300 on SLI
10,000 rpm sata's on raid 0

...hi can you test render please an normal complexity scene to see if indeed there is increase with maxwell under Win64 ?

...I do not know why but I am not sure that the 30% increase you are mentioning is real.

...hope to prove me wrong! :D

thanks robert!

So, is this a known issue?

Thanks a lot for your response, I will update and […]

did you tried luxCore?
