I noticed this right away:
when rendering an image from maxwell at 1.0 (right) it is correct (compared to vray left)

Image

however when pixel aspec is set to anything other then 1.0 this is what happens:
maxwell squashes the image correctly as vray however there is a perspective shift that occurs in maxwell camera...all tho it does not show up in the viewport.

To me this looks like VRay keeps the horizontal viewing angle constant, while Maxwell preserves the vertical viewing angle.

In Cinemaxwell at least M~R uses the horizontal angle as reference, so I would consider the behavior you have shown here as a bug, too.

Im not sure about preserving the vertical viewing angle...to me it seems that the camera is forced back by exectly the amount of cropping field (safe/tile safe) but also the perspective changes on the lens. Here is another test with this time brazil and M~R

I'd like to see what NL team has to say about this.

The Maxwell camera preserves the image when changing pixel aspect. It means that, at least, it shows the same part of the image like pixel aspect 1.0. For example V-ray is losing verticaly part of the image when changing 1.0 to 1.2 and maxwell preserves it.

I don't know what is the standard about pixel aspect. If anyone knows what's the best solution about pixel aspect, information is welcome.

A check in mentalray is in order :) To me the Maxwell version seems more correct because it doesn't lose pixels

well, my take is that maxwell renders it differently from all other renders which render it the same. So, if this is a feature then there should be an option to conform to the other type of pixel aspect so that different passes could be rendered by different renders. At this stage its impossible.
Plus, if maxwell renders exectly the same pixel aspect at 1.0 and way off aspect at 1.2 imho thats not correct.

P.S. why did this thread got moved from bug reports?

My guess is that they did this on purpose therefore it's not a bug as it was an intended outcome... but I agree that conformity is needed (as an option at the least) as we all composite stuff :)

Dmitry,

This issue will be considered internally and what you've said make sense.
However, we don't accept this as a bug report but a thing to take care.
We will inform you about this issue in the following days.
Thank you for your tests...
