I'm not a photographer
and can't translate some of the theory i've read
on long exposure to even attempt this in Maxwell

My question is;
Firstly on a lighting exposure level,
what kind of settings would you suggest to keep the intake of light so low
and exposure so long to ever achieve this look, or is it currently impossible?

You can set long exposure with shutterspeeds below 1.
eg. for 5 secs, you must set shutterspeed 0.2
Your examples need accurate motion blur with multiple subframes.
Currently Maxwell has 2 subframes, so you won't be able to burn
that beautiful light patterns even with long exposure times.

Of course, of course..

I didn't think about that.

If you're to take motion into consideration
you need multiple frames to be rendered.

1)for the fire spinning and fruits images you need to enable motion blur and play with SS.

2)for waterfall image by adjusting iso, burn, gamma you will be a ble to achieve similar results

This is mostly "motion blur" on those images, thanks to a long exposure. And its currently supported by Maxwell, but has some limitations.

If you set your moving object up right, and use a long exposure, and keep your shutter closed eneugh to keep your image from burning out, you can get very similar results. from straight, linear motions.
Maxwell right now supports onl y2 geometric samples for motion blur. This means linear, motions ill render corectly, and any curvature in the path will produce odd results. For example, you can render a waterfall lika that quite accurate, but glowing bulbs rotating around apples is impossible.

More geometric samples for motion blur will be available in the future.

EDIT: Whoa.... I've typed this post for 5 minutes, and meanwhile others posted answers. Sorry.
