The brightness-reflectance conversion (now) should be like this:

Grey diffuse color: it´s a percentage of 255 grey scale
Any color: it´s a percentage of the V (value, brightness) in HSV (or HSB)
Image map: it´s a percentage of the average V value of all the pixels in the image. (I don´t know how can I estimate this value)

This is a "easy" to do reflectance conversion to control high brightness in current version of Maxwell, but the spectral reflectance of materials is much more complex, and, as Tom said, it could be implemented in the future material editor.
