Inasmuch as you misinterpreted my post, hesitating would have been a good idea.

Mike Tripoli
A statement you're not making to my face, I notice.

I have no intention or desire to continue this... I just want to know why I'm getting different results, that's all. I won't be dragged into a prolonged pissing match.

As I said, running some tests, results soon. Thanks again, Philip.

Hi Philip,

Thanks for your continued testing. Here is my result:

Image
Fundamentally, not much different. You get some redness at the top that I do not (?). The biggest thing that I noticed was that I had to make my candle flame larger (more like yours) and brighter. I was *trying* to be physically accurate with EVERYTHING; maybe this is a mistake this early in the game. I'm also working on another test of luminosity levels; I suspect somehting is up there. I've also included an update of one of my first SSS tests; this is a solid cylinder with an emitter buried inside.

Thanks again,

Hey mike, no problem, always happy to help in testing if i can.

I ran another test comparing the way we setup candles
This is how i see the difference

and this is the result

Image

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Currently running another test with a candle modelled more hollowed out like yours and sss adjusted with more absorption and less scattering, as the candle sides are quite thin where it's hollowed out, will post results soon

Hi Philip,

Can you import Lightwave objects? I can post teh scene with objects. I don't think I can take 3DS objects (easily, I think there's something that prevents this, but I don't remember what).

I thought this was a good test because I have the actual candle and was able to model it and take pictures of it easily!

Thanks,

Mike Tripoli

Here's what i think is closer to your model,

sss has been adjusted to :

Absorption coef = 1.0
Scattering coef = 0.05

setup

result

I think this is quite close to the photo now, for correct placement of sss in the candle wax.

Thank you so much for working through this with me Philip; I feel like I understand more about what's going on. I am *slightly* concerned that the model needed to change in order to match the photo. I've been working on the concept that if I model things *exactly* and then let Maxwell do it's thing, I would get real world results. It looks like one still needs to "play with things" a bit before they match. This is not a criticism per se, hell in other renderers you have to FAKE almost everything!

My point is is that I intend to use Maxwell primarily for doing product renderings. As the products come from Solidworks (and into Lightwave right now, once SW and M~R play well together, I hope to skip this intermediate step), you can see that it would be a drag to have to change or manipulate the CAD model from it's original in order to acheive a desired result.

This is one of the reasons that eventually we will have an expert on staff to take care of these things

Thanks again. If there's anything that I can do to help you out, just let me know!
