Installed the beta version exactly the way the readme says, started Max via C4D - and read "MAXWELL Engine version 1_1_33_0001_alpha_".

I think you can only have one maxwell app on disk at the same time.
I had the same problem but managed to solve it by stuffing the old one and logging out and in again.

There's definitely something wrong.
Here it reads: 1_2_2_beta

Something wrong, yes, but I couldn't figure out what it was. I deleted the Maxwell folder itself as well as the C4D plugin, then installed the beta and the latest Cinemaxwell; result - still alpha! From a different partition with a brandnew installed and updated Tiger the beta opens ok, but I still wonder why it wouldn't from the first one.

Use the Finder search function to check that you you have only ONE maxwell application file and do not use a complete different application as you think.
I seriously doubt that you have got a special version, and that string comes from the application itself. Store old applications as *.zips, and not in their executable form.

Kabe,

you're absolutely right! Very often I can't force myself to throw old things away; now I found a Max backup folder I had overlooked before, and it was NOT zipped. Thanks for the hint!
