Hi folks,

Attempting to add a few additional Linux based render-nodes to existing Win-7 Pro networked machines, but encountering a problem I can’t get passed. Checked through all the FAQ etc, but can’t find any solution.

I have x1 system with Ubuntu 14.04 installed and shared on the network, and everything is visible to the primary Win7-Pro system I’m using, so all looks OK so far. However, I cannot activate the license on the Ubuntu machine and get the same error every rime:

“Error Validating license. The license file has been correctly written but this system cannot connect to license manager. Check the IP and Port specified are correct. It may be due to a firewall blocking the connection.”

I have allowed mxnetwork and RLM License Server through Windows firewall, and then turned off Windows firewall completely, still no success. RLM is running fine on the primary workstation. I’m selecting the option “I have installed the RLM server on a different computer and wish to access it from this computer”, I provide the (correct) computer name and default Port # of 5053, but same error message no matter what I try.

From Maxwell Render Node on the Ubuntu machine, I get the error message:
ERROR: Error getting license , returned code : Communication error with license server
ERROR: TCP server can not listen to port : 45459

I’m assuming this is a (relatively) simple thing to address, but I’m no Linux expert and this is my 1st experience with Ubuntu and Maxwell. All the Win7 machines on network are working fine…

Any help would be very much appreciated.

I am a linux virgin too, but I got the license successfully installed.
Have the RLM running on win server 2012.

are you sure DNS is working on the linux box, or are you anyway using the ip to connect to RLM?

is the IP of your Linux box in a range that is allowed incoming(on all neccessary ports) to the RLM server Machine?

on Linux you have a firewall as well and you should check that the ports in question are open.
Unfortunately I am not in the position to give you serious advice on how to configure it correctly on Ubuntu, my nodes are all isolated from the internet, so I don't take too much care with correct FW rules, especially on Linux where everything is a bit different. so I just punched through the whole range in the 40ks that maxwell uses by default.(and enabled services: smb/smbclient, dns, netBios, ntp, etc.)

make sure you make the changes permanent and then reload the rules.I am using centos,
but I guess the FW GUI it is similar on Ubuntu.

hope it helps

Hi,

Many thanks for the pointers. I eventually gave up... :(

As much as I would have loved to have a "Windows free" render environment, Linux doesn't represent an easy to use platform, without getting into the guts of networking, something I’m not all that familiar with (I’m a simple user these days and not my own IT dept.) I do tend to agree that it’s likely caught up somehow in the FW, even though I did manage to make all the ports “open”, it still wouldn’t cooperate with RLM.

The easy way out for me now is to go buy additional copies of Windows Home Premium, while I still can.
