Do we still need to make one render for diffuse one for reflection and another for refraction?

FYI
got the same error about registering explorer thumbnails. however i could not locate the suggested mx-shell-register.bat

so I simply re-run the maxwell installer deselecting all install options except the mxi thumbnails, and this time it finished successfully with thumbnails working fine in windows explorer;
