is it possible to define a material that let light go through but is not transparent and has no shininess? Like a curtain/ membrane.

Sure -- have you tried using thin SSS? That is the "SSS (Single Sided)" material Character in the plugin, and this (leaves, lampshades, etc) is generally what it is used for.
