JD,

I just installed a second full floating license on another machine. Open MW render and activated license. Rhino plugin was installed before activation. Rendering through Rhino first says "checking Maxwell license...." Then it says do you want to activate - yes and i connect to the Maxwell license manager, type in IP, etc. and says successful. Then Rhino says activation failed.

I know this is something simple? I tried turning off the firewall, but same. Tried running as admin=same.

Please post everything printed to the plugin's log viewer (anonymize as necessary) during the entire sequence of events. It should look something like this (not exactly, I'm simulating a failure by stopping the rlm_nl service, trying to export, allowing the plugin to start the license activator, and then re-starting the rlm_nl service, before cancelling out of the license activator, at which time the licensing code reports that I have a valid license):

From what I gather, it probably will make no difference to suggest that you run the license activator directly (it's in your Maxwell 3 directory), rather than from within the plugin, since the license activator apparently thinks everything is okay. However, I don't know whether it just writes its license file, or if it actually tries to check out a license, like the plugin does after control returns from the license activator.

I suppose the the trouble could be due to the license server not running, or to it running on another machine that's inaccessible from the current one, or to a misconfiguration of the ports assigned to the license server (and I'm not sure what you mean by saying you installed another license on another machine -- from what I understand, the number of licenses is indicated in the license file itself, and you don't ever want actually to install the license server in two machines). Unfortunately, I won't likely be able to help much myself, since the plugin just basically makes a few calls to the licensing interface, and reports what it receives in reply. But hopefully the information printed in the log viewer, along with the information found here, might get you going.

I reinstalled the plugin and it now works ? Guess I should have tried that first.

I'm not certain what "No heartbeat response received" means, but I'd open task manager and make sure that the rlm_nl service is running. Unless you're on the other machine (the one without rlm_nl installed), in which case you need (assuming the error means the license server can't be found) to ensure that Maxwell is looking in the right place, and that the machine where it is running is accessible. When you are running the license server on another machine, the license file on the local machine doesn't have any license info, and instead just has the hostname or IP of the license server, and a port number, and it's necessary that you should be able to ping that machine from the local one. Be aware, also, that there are both incoming and outgoing rules on firewalls, so you may want to temporarily deactivate them on both machines, to find out if that is the problem. I would recommend reading through the instructions and troubleshooting info found here and here, to try and ensure that you have things configured correctly.

I can think of absolutely no way for reinstalling the plugin to have any effect on this.

Here's is some more to the story....
Our #1 license v3.1 is on the machine with RLM running and network rendering has functioned fine with other nodes. We have a 2nd license (full floating as well) that we finally upgraded to V3.1 yesterday and the problem started. At one point through Rhino (v5) it said checking license and asked do we want to activate. We clicked Yes and we were able to use the MW license activator to point to the RLM on the #1 machine and it said successful. Then Rhino said activator failed/or crashed and the same problem repeated. After reinstalling the plugin then it worked fine as I said.
However, I went back to the #1 machine and clicked render (via Rhino) and the same "Checking MW license" came up and it said no license four. DOOO! How did that problem just switch computers? So i reinstalled the plugin on machine #1 and it fixed it. We can now renee simultaneously through Rhino on both machines. At least today we can...so who knows.

I will definitely watch the firewall settings if the problem comes back.
