I installed MW on a second mac, I have 10 licenses, but when I start up studio, it says it is unlicensed. I ran the license activation tool several times, everything seems normal, but studio won't work (that is render or save). the license server is on another mac. rendering files from maxwell is not a problem, even over the network.
have I overlooked something?

License saved correctly.
License Type: MAXWELL SUITE FLOATING

I'm sorry to bring this up again, but Studio was licensed correctly the first evening, it ran fine, I switched on the firewall again and it kept running, now it appears unlicensed again. I turned off the firewall again on both machines, tried to run the LM again, it said "saved correctly" but I can't do a thing with Studio.

this is really a pain in the neck since I have a huge job and need both machines to get it done in time.

thanks for looking into this

Please watch the videos about installing and licensing Maxwell found in the docs, they should make it pretty clear what happens when you run that license activator. There is absolutely no need to rerun the licensing, all it will do is resave a license file which you already had on this Studio computer. This license file only contains one line of text in it, and it is found in: Users\<username>\Maxwell

http://support.nextlimit.com/display/mx ... stallation

The line of text in it is:
HOST computernameorIP ANY portnr

so it tells Maxwell/Studio on this computer on which of your networked computers the RLM license server is running and which port it should use to connect to it.

There isn't any more black magic than that. If Studio tells you it's not licensed, it will be of no help at all to rerun the license activator which will simply rewrite that single line of text lic file on this computer, because you chose the option "I have installed the RLM server on a different computer and wish to access it from this computer" which is correct, since the RLM server is not running on this computer. That's all the license activator will do on this computer.

If Studio can't connect, then:

-something is blocking it from reaching the RLM server (either on the RLM computer, or this one)
-the RLM server is actually not running on that computer. Try opening Studio on that computer and see if it gets its license from RLM.
-the RLM server is for some reason using another port, than the default specified in this single line license text file. But in this case Maxwell shouldn't work either on this computer.
-some other app is already using the default port 5053 and so Studio/RLM can't also use it. But in this case Maxwell shouldn't work either on this computer.

Please watch the vid on licensing on OSX, it goes through all this in 5 minutes and you will have a clear understanding in case you run into this problem again in the future. My bet is still something that's blocking Studio from talking with the RLM server on the other computer.

I repeat, it will make absolutely no difference to rerun the license activator in your case, if that license file is already in the correct location and points to the correct computer. Simply open it in any text editor to check it.
