Currently When working with referenced materials, they do not show the texture, (in Maya Preview Window) in the Hardware Texturing Mode, instead they show the plain colour as set in the Material ID.
Additionally when working with referenced mb files which contains Referenced materials, they do not show even the Material ID colour, but a plain colour for all the referenced model.
I wonder if this limitation could be fixed. It would help to preview Referenced Models / Materials

Are you sure your viewport is set to textured mode? (Did you press the '6' key?) Inside MXED, you can click the yellow and black checker icon on the top-left (beneath the "i" button) to select which of the textures that the material is using you want to use for viewport preview. After you do that, save the material, click "update from file" in the Maya material, make sure the Maya viewport is set to textured mode, and you should see the texture.

I don't think the limitation with referenced mb files can be fixed. I'll look into it, but I think Maya does all the drawing itself in that case, and the plug-in doesn't get a chance to paint the correct texture or color on the object.
