For this new version we worked a lot in optimizing and improving render times. Those speed optimizations have been performed in different independent scenarios (scenes with instances, scenes with heavy motion blur, etc), so the obtained gain depends strongly on the scene.
You will find scenes that will render x3 times faster than today, while other scenes will render almost the same speed.

But in all cases you will experience a gain compared to v2 engine. The amount of the gain is what depends on the scene.

Great, no?

So then, scenes with a lighting like a studio set will not have any improvement in terms of speed?

gah , that does seem the implication .... on a positive note the volumetric image was very impressive .

They are worse. We have worked very hard for eight years to make them significantly inferior :P

They are much better of course, that beta thing was a crazy experiment (as many other crazy things we did at that time) we did as a test with constant fog, nothing to do with what we have done now

On the speed thing, in each release we try to add speed improvements. As Dario says, this time they are more focus on massive scenes with motion blur, lots of instances, dozens of hundreds of millions or particles or hair, speed up factors can be massive in these cases. In other releases we try to speed up other scenarios, we know speed is the nº1 issue and a big part of the team is 24/7 working on that.

Yeah, great new stuff!
I'm really looking forward to volumetrics, it looks amazing ... The other improvements too, but I think that would have been my main wish (and of course a flawlessly running network render :))

I'm going to go one step beyond with the volumetrics image: are we seeing a 3d procedural texture used to make the smoke?
I wanted to make the same question but I was so excited to know that I didn't.
Is like when you don't even want to see the trailer...

Hey Paolo,

As I commented: in most cases you will experience a gain compared to v2 engine. The amount of the gain is what depends on the scene.

it was mindblowing already in 2004 8)

Now, it sounds like whole-body-blowing :-)

Great stuff, Juan! Thanks for sharing!
Now that we get volumetrics, may I ask if there's any chance to see 'water caustics' too?
