Here are some of my experiments with SSS, trying to detemine what setting are needed and how they change. The trouble is I can't tell the difference between them.
I'm using a model from Stanford hi-res scanning repository (http://graphics.stanford.edu/data/3Dscanrep/) polygon reduced in XSI, exported as an obj, via Wings3D (to correct the obj file), into MatadorLight [thanks daros] and rendered - phew!
All are rendered at 320x240 with a sampling level of 12 (nice and quick) but they all look the same! I did run a longer test to sample level 18 but all that was added was a bit more clarity and lots of black dots (http://www.maxwellrender.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3977).
Has anyone else had any luck with deciphering the Absorption and Scattering settings? Are they very sensitive and therefore need very low values?
Absorption = 0.00, Scattering = 0.00 [Reference]..............................................Absorption = 0.00, Scattering = 0.00 [Reference]

Absorption = 0.25, Scattering = 0.00.................................................................Absorption = 0.00, Scattering = 0.25

Absorption = 0.50, Scattering = 0.00.................................................................Absorption = 0.00, Scattering = 0.50

Absorption = 0.75, Scattering = 0.00.................................................................Absorption = 0.00, Scattering = 0.75

Absorption = 1.00, Scattering = 0.00.................................................................Absorption = 0.00, Scattering = 1.00

More tests to follow...
